Expressing confidence for giving his best in the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 5) for Delhi Daredevils team,23-year-old Tamil Nadu Off-spinner Sunny Suresh Gupta believed that the spinners will have to mould themselves for various formats.
“It is my debut in IPL and will represent Virendra Sehwag-led Delhi Daredevils in the league,” Gupta said asserting he will give 100 per cent “even though it is tough to make into the playing XI.
“I will try my best to cement my position in the team if selected in the eleven,” the right-arm off spinner, who impressed the Tamil Nadu selectors with his performance in the Ranji Trophy tournament this season, said.
Asked about the role of a spinner specially in the T20 format of the game, alrounder Gupta said it depended on the cricketer “how one can mould himself with bat and ball”.
I strongly believe that spinners will have to adopt the fast changing techniques particularly after the introduction of T20 version of the game,Gupta,a product of MRF foundation, said.
Gupta, who has bagged overall 56 wickets in 27 first class matches with an average of 42.60,said his batting has improved a lot ever since he joined MRF Foundation four years ago and appreciated work of MRF Foundation Chief Coach M. Senthelnathan for the result.
Gupta, who made his Ranji debut against Madhya Pradesh at Ranchi in 2003,had scored oveall 430 runs with 51 being his highest in the first class domestic tournaments.
He played alongwith Team India skipper MS Dhoni and fast bowler Varun Aaron, who is also a MRF foundation product.
A resident of the steel city of Jamshedpur,Gupta, who had represented Jharkhand Ranji team between 2003-008,was here to visit his parents before leaving for Delhi for training ahead of the IPL 5 commencing from April 4.
Gupta said Sehwag-led Delhi Daredevils was a balanced team comprising of in-form batsmen and bowlers.
The team has deep batting line up as well as bowlers,he said adding the squad has good prospect in the IPL 5 with batsmen like David Warner,Kevin Peterson,Ross Taylor,Mahela Jayawardene, besides Sehwag, all among the runs.
Besides Gupta, his former team mates left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem and bowling sensation Varun Aaron from Jharkhand are also part of the Delhi team in the IPL 5.
Admitting that he had learnt a lot from Dhoni while representing Jharkhand,Gupta said “we had never felt uncomfortable to seek tips from Dhoni as he always came forward to help budding cricketers.”
