Delhi chief coach KP Bhaskar blamed the maladministration that has plagued DDCA asa reason for team’s poor show against a formidable outfit like Karnataka.

Delhi succumbed to a humiliating innings and 160-run defeat at the hands of Karun Nair’s boys.

An irate Bhaskar pulled no punches after the match.

“In Under-23, we had 45 players playing. So how long is it going to take for them to reach to the Ranji Trophy level? If things don’t improve, there might be a situation, where 50 players will be playing for Delhi in the eight Ranji Trophy games,” Bhaskar stated.

“Things need to be put in place but at least there’s a start with Justice Mudgal taking some initiative. let’s hope things improve.”

Pointing out that the team was short on practice as they did not play any tournaments in the build-up to season, he said:”See we are used to playing 40-over games. We don’t have three-day formats, we don’t really play the Buchi Babus and the KSCA (tournaments).

“I got the team two days before (the start of the season). There was not much of mental preparation. Whatever was happening is whatever they were doing on their own. So I really don’t know. So that is something which we need to work on, the system has to fall into place, we have to have more opportunities of playing exposures and try to build a team before getting into the Ranji Trophy.”

Asked about Ishant Sharma’s performance who’s returning after recovering from Chinkungunya fever, he said: “He had certain issues. He didn’t really go flat out. He tried his best but I expected that from him. He did well but I think they batted really well, to be honest. They didn’t give any chances, they played as per merit, they batted well.”

Hitting out at their batsmen, Delhi coach KP Bhaskar said their “messed up and silly batting” was really disappointing for a state that has set standards giving talents Mohinder Amarnath, Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli.

“I always tell these boys when you represent Delhi, you’re not just representing yourself or your state. You are representing the whole cricket fraternity.’ You’re talking about people like Sehwag, Kohli, Amarnath and Madan Lal… They’ve set some standards, they’ve had character,” the former Delhi captain said, critcising the batting of Gautam Gambhir and Co.

After being skittled out for 90, Delhi foled for 164 in their second essay to lose to Karnataka by an innings and 160 runs inside three days the Ranji Trophy group B match at Eden Gardens.

“The wicket was perfectly fine, I wouldn’t blame the wicket for it — it was not a 90-run wicket, to be honest. The toss was a factor, there was a little bit of moisture on the pitch, that was definitely there. But as I said, it wasn’t a 90-run pitch. We didn’t apply at all. We threw our wickets away, twice. Today was absolutely silly. I don’t think anybody got out because of the pitch.”

On their batting in the second innings, he said: “It was all (because of) stupid shots, shots that you don’t expect from a Ranji Trophy player. You need to show a lot of character, you need to show from what really the past has been.”

Batting second after opting to bowl, Karnataka had posted 414 in their first innings and Bhaskar said the pitch was perfect and it was ‘stupid’ batting that cost them the humiliating defeat.

“Bad batting, that’s all… We batted very badly, we did hara-kiri, the application wasn’t there at all, which is something that is very surprising because the last two games that we played we really showed character, we were very focused and somehow, this game, we just messed it up.”
