MS Dhoni was present at Chennai for Chennaiyin FC’s thrilling encounter against NorthEast United. Dhoni, who co-owns the ISL franchisee has been present in all Chennaiyin matches since the conclusion of India’s ODI series against New Zealand. This time, his family was there to join him at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.
Dhoni’s retirement from Tests means that he is not involved with Indian team until January when they play England in a five-match ODI series. His presence in the stadium, though, didn’t give Chennaiyin FC any luck as the team was held to a heart breaking 3-3 draw against NorthEast United. Chennaiyin took the lead thrice with striker Dudu scoring a hat trick but were leveled all three times by NorthEast. The draw means that the defending champions’ chances of making it to the semi final spots is now slender. Chennaiyin co-owner Abhishek Bhachan was also present in the stadium.
The match against NorthEast United was Chennaiyin penultimate game in the league stage of the 2016 edition of the Indian Super League. Chennaiyin now travel to Goa play FC Goa in a repeat of last year’s final that Chennaiyin won in a dramatic fashion at Chennai. ISL 2016 hasn’t quite turned out the way the finalists had planned with FC Goa rooted to the bottom of the table and Chennaiyin above them at seventh. FC Goa’s elimination has been confirmed while Chennaiyin FC are virtually knocked out which means both the finalists of last season won’t be playing in the semi finals.
Dhoni will next be present on the cricket field when India take on England in the first ODI at Pune. The ODI series is preceded by a gruelling five match Test series in which Virat Kohli is leading the side. India has taken a 1-0 lead after two matches. The third match started on Saturday at Mohali.
