New Zealand beat India by 19 runs in Ranchi to level series 2-2

India failed to chase down 261 in Ranchi as New Zealand once again came from behind to level the five-match series at 2-2.

By: Express Web Desk | Updated: October 29, 2016 12:00 pm
India and New Zealand were level at 2-2 after the Ranchi ODI.

With the series up for grabs when India locked horns with New Zealand in the fourth ODI of the five-match series in Ranchi on Wednesday, the hosts didn’t take most of the opportunity and a modest target of 260 to lose by 19 runs. After being up by 2-1 with an emphatic win in Mohali, India were all set to chase another target but that didn’t materialise with the hosts collapsing in the middle of the innings.

There was late run scoring from the tail but it proved to be too little too late as India lost and made things interesting for the final ODI in Vishakhapatnam.

FOUR! Trent Boult gives Kulkarni width and the last man out for India is once again on hand to slash it for a four. Passes a flying Kiwi fielder on the way but it was unstoppable. India need 27 now from 18 balls

Tanuj Lakhina October 26, 20169:05 pm

FOUR! Mitchell Santner providing Dhawal Kulkarni with plenty of width on the offside. And the tailender flexes his arms to slash it for a four. India still need 35 from 25.

Tanuj Lakhina October 26, 20168:59 pm

SIX! Ish Sodhi comes into the attack and Dhawal Kulkarni smacks him for a six on the first ball. Plays it on the turn and clears the fielder at mid-off.

Tanuj Lakhina October 26, 20168:53 pm

Axar Patel b Boult 38 (40)

And Axar is bowled by Boult. The ball comes searing in and hits his pad before making its way on the off stump. Whatever little hope India had looks to have gone down in smoke. Reduced to 207/9

Tanuj Lakhina October 26, 20168:50 pm

Amit Mishra RUN OUT! 15 (17)

Mix up and Amit Mishra pays the price for it. Axar Patel sends the ball to the boundary and the duo run the first one hard. Then turns for a second but immediately reconsiders however Mishra has left his mark and made it half down the pitch. Too late. Easy job for Watling after another good throw by Santner.

Tanuj Lakhina October 26, 20168:48 pm

That six also brings the 200 for India. At the end of the over, India are 204/7 after 42 overs. Need another 57 runs from 48 balls. The equation getting much more equal.

Tanuj Lakhina October 26, 20168:46 pm

SIX! Axar Patel connects immaculately with a full delivery by Neesham and it goes flying straight down for six. Gets his front foot into play and gets to the pitch of the delivery to get the desired elevation.

Tanuj Lakhina October 26, 20168:39 pm

FOUR! Mishra gets into the act now. Beautiful use of the wrists and the timing ensures it beats the fielder at mid-on and goes running to the boundary for a four. India are 190/7 with 40 overs gone

Tanuj Lakhina October 26, 20168:36 pm

FOUR! Poor fielding by Mitchell Santner on the boundary. Slides in to field but gets soft hands to it and it trickles down behind him for a four. Axar Patel with a well timed and well placed shot to add to the scoreboard. More of the same, please!

Tanuj Lakhina October 26, 20168:32 pm

India need 83 from 68 balls with Axar Patel and Amit Mishra in the middle. One of these two will have to start hitting big and soon to ensure India don’t have to rush at the end. Or ensure there is something worth fighting for.

Tanuj Lakhina October 26, 20168:22 pm

Hardik Pandya c Tom Latham b Mitchell Santner 9 (13)

Tom Latham with another good catch on the ropes to dismiss Pandya. The Indian batsman tries to clear the infield with a chipped effort by Latham moves smartly to his left to take the catch on the run from long off and deep extra cover. India are 167/7

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20168:01 pm

Hardik Pandya is the new man in and he joins Axar Patel in the middle. Both can bat, so can Amit Mishra but it will now take some doing to chase down the total. Advantage New Zealand at this stage of the game

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20168:01 pm

WICKET! 2/2 for Southee as he now traps Kedar Jadhav in front for a golden duck. The ball kept low and Jadhav, covering all three stumps, was hit right in front of them. India now in deep deep trouble at 154/6

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20167:58 pm

WICKET! Pandey goes after Southee but fails to clear Latham in the ring. India 154/5

Pandey got his eye in, went after Southee but failed to clear Latham who took a brilliant catch on the run. It’s match on in Ranchi and New Zealand will now have a spring in their stride

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20167:44 pm

WICKET! Stunned faces in the crowd as James Neesham picks another wicket, this time of India captain MS Dhoni. The seamer bowled one quicker and angled it into the right-hander. Dhoni went for the typical Dhoni push but the ball sneaked through the space between his bat and pad. India in a spot of bother now. 135/4

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20167:38 pm

Top shot! Axar is away with a glorious boundary. He’s fresh from a hundred in Ranji Trophy, and would like to make most of the runs he has under his belt

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20167:37 pm

Axar Patel comes out to bat at no.5. The left-hander comes ahead of Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya and Kedar Jadhav

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20167:34 pm

WICKET! Loud loud shout and the finger goes up. Neesham breaks the steady stand as he traps Rahane in front for 57. India 128/3

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20167:24 pm

Rahane slices one away for a boundary. Brings up his FIFTY, off 61 balls. His first in the series, and 16th in the format

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20167:19 pm

Every run off Dhoni’s bat cheered aggressively by the capacity crowd in Ranchi. India move to 112/2 in the 24th over of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20167:07 pm

Massive roar from the crowd as Kohli walks back and MS Dhoni walks out to the middle

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20167:06 pm

WICKET! Kohli chases a wide delivery by Sodhi and edges it to Watling behind the stumps. Not the first time he’s out chasing a very ordinary delivery. He could have hit that anywhere but could only manage an edge. Out after scoring 45, India 98/2

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20167:03 pm

Sodhi continues, and so does India’s control over proceedings. Rahane is in the 30s while Kohli is nearing another FIFTY, in a chase

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:58 pm

Virat Kohli reaches 7,500 ODI runs, in his 175th ODI. These runs coming at an average in excess of 50

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:46 pm

SIX! Catch, screamed Santner but Kohli got enough on that. Didn’t come out of the middle, beat a diving Tom Latham in the deep and just cleared the ropes

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:45 pm

Rahane takes a single and brings up the FIFTY-run partnership with Kohli off 63 balls. India move to 69/1 in the 15th over of the chase

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:42 pm

Kohli with a late touch to the Sodhi delivery and it has enough legs to travel to the third-man fence. The partnership between Kohli and Rahane looking good now

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:41 pm

Spin from both ends. Williamson introduces Ish Sodhi from the other end

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:29 pm

Spin for the first time. Mitchell Santner to bowl the 11th over of the innings. India 50/1 with Rahane and Kohli in the middle

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:22 pm

This time in complete control. Rahane rises with the bounce of the delivery and pulls Southee away for the second boundary of the over

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:20 pm

Just checked his drive at the last moment, was in the air for a while but Rahane managed to find the gap and get another boundary

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:15 pm

New Zealand have got the early wicket they wanted, it’s important they sustain pressure and look for another one. Can’t afford to let Kohli settle down, in a chase

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:04 pm

In-form Virat Kohli is the new man in. He’s fresh from an unbeaten 154 in the last game in Mohali

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:01 pm

WICKET! After going past his bat in the previous over, Southee finds Rohit’s edge. The opener offered a forward defensive stroke but could only edge it to Watling behind the stumps. India 19/1

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20166:00 pm

At the end of the fourth over, India look steady at 19/0

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20165:56 pm

Both Rahane and Rohit have been watchful so far. With not a big target staring at them, the duo can afford to spend time in the middle

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20165:53 pm

Southee and Boult are the two new-ball bowlers for the visitors but it’s matter of time before we see the three spinners in action

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20165:51 pm

India openers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane out in the middle for the 261-run chase. Both would like to get some runs under their belt today

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20165:02 pm

Hosts restrict visitors to 260/7 in Ranchi. (Guptill 72; Mishra 2/41, Patel 1/38)

India stage a fine recovery to keep New Zealand to 260/7. The visitors got off to a brilliant start by Indian spinners got them back into the game, and regular wickets towards the business end meant New Zealand didn’t get close to the 300-run mark, something which looked a mere formality after the kind of start they got. All eyes will now be on dew, and its role could be crucial since there are three spinners in Black Caps XI today

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20164:52 pm

WICKET! No.1 for Umesh as Devcich chips one straight to Hardik Pandya in the ring. Didn’t make good connection, and presented a comfortable catch for Pandya. New Zealand slip further to 242/7 after 48 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20164:44 pm

India wouldn’t have asked for a better performance in the death overs. They aren’t conceding too many runs, but have managed to pick wickets at regular intervals. Santner and Devcich the two men out in the middle for the visitors now. Still four overs left in the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20164:43 pm

WICKET! Ross Taylor goes for the second run, the throw from Kulkarni is not that good but Dhoni does well to collect it in front of the stumps and, without even looking at the stumps, he he throws the ball back to disturb the woodwork. Even Taylor can’t believe that. New Zealand 223/6

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20164:35 pm

WICKET! Kulkarni picks his first wicket as Watling hits one straight to R Sharma in the deep. India have done a fine job in the last ten overs. Managed to pick two wickets, and conceded only 35 runs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20164:19 pm

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20164:17 pm

200 comes up for New Zealand in the 41st over of the innings. They got off to a good start but lost way when they needed to change gears. Taylor and Watling in the middle, and they would look to accelerate any time from now

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20164:11 pm

India have done well to contain the visitors in the business end of the innings. Two quick wickets have worked for them and now Ross Taylor holds key for the Black Caps. Good 12 overs left, and New Zealand, if they bat well, can score 300 from here

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20164:09 pm

WICKET! Flat hit from Neesham but Kohli does well to take a sharp catch in the ring. Mishra is delighted to pick his second wicket of the game, New Zealand 192/4 after 38 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:58 pm

WICKET! Edge, and gone. Dhoni takes a sharp catch behind the stumps off Mishra to get rid of Williamson. The right-hander went for the cut, got a healthy edge and Dhoni kept his gloves in position and collected the catch. New Zealand 184/3 in the 36th over

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:56 pm

Tight over by Axar, just three runs coming from it. The left-arm spinner’s figures read an impressive 1/35 after nine overs. He did a fine job of containing the flow of runs after the openers gave New Zealand a flying start, and then broke the stand when he scalped opener Latham

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:51 pm

With 16 overs left in the New Zealand innings, and eight wickets in hand, this promises to be a high-scoring affair in Ranchi. Visitors’ job, especially after picking three spinners, could get difficult if the dew arrives in the evening

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:49 pm

Williamson goes inside-out over covers against Mishra, and gets a boundary. The ball was turning away from the right-hander but he stuck to his shot and managed to make good connection on that occasion

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:36 pm

The Australia tour, with India A team, has worked for Pandya. He has looked an improved bowler now and is consistently bowling in the early 140s now, getting the extra bounce even off this Ranchi pitch. New Zealand 161/2 after 30 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:29 pm

Marginally short and Williamson hits it through covers for a boundary. Brings up the 150 for New Zealand, and takes his individual score to 22

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:27 pm

Pandya looking much better in the second spell. Getting a good angle going into the right-hander, and attacking the stumps on a consistent basis. New Zealand 149/2 after 28 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:17 pm

Guptill misses out on hundred. Only one New Zealand batsman has hit a hundred on the tour so far when Kane Williamson led from the front during the second ODI at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:14 pm

WICKET! Pandya bowls one from wide of the crease, gets a good angle into the right-hander, Guptill (72) goes for the big drive against the rising delivery only to edge it to Dhoni behind the stumps. New Zealand 138/2

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:10 pm

The partnership between Guptill and Williamson is worth 40 now and is taking New Zealand to a very good position for a charge in the business end of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20163:08 pm

New Zealand build another stand as skipper Williamson gives set batsman Guptill good company in the middle. The score moves to 136/1 in the 24th over of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:48 pm

Kedar Jadhav and Axar bowling in tandem now. The former has given the skipper the wicket when he needed it the most. Can he do it today too?

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:45 pm

Williamson places one with perfection and brings up the 100 for New Zealand with a boundary, in the 18th over of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:45 pm

FIFTY for Guptill, his 31st in the format and first of the series. Has been a disappointing tour for the right-hander so far and he has good opportunity to make a big one today

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:37 pm

WICKET! Axar pushes one wide, bowls it slower through the air and Latham, going for the sweep, miscues and presents an easy catch for Ajinkya Rahane. India break the fluent stand. 96/1

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:29 pm

India spinners Mishra and Patel keeping it tight. Just six from their three overs so far. Dhoni will be happy with the start, and won’t mind a wicket at this stage of the game. New Zealand 87/0 after 13 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:24 pm

Spin from both ends now. Axar Patel with the ball as India’s search for the first wicket continues. Axar has looked off-colour in the series so far, and would like to make an impression in a crucial contest today

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:20 pm

Amit Mishra, who has picked 8 wickets in the series so far, into the attack now. His spell will be crucial for India as both Kiwi openers are well set in the middle

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:18 pm

Another expensive over. Pandya leaks 12 from his first as New Zealand move to 80/0 at the end of the 10th over of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:16 pm

Three wides on the trot by Pandya. Looking to bowl the inswinger but not able to control the line of the delivery

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:14 pm

With seamers struggling to hit the right spots, Dhoni would pin hopes on his spinners to contain the flow of runs and break the threatening stand

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:13 pm

Hardik Pandya replaces Kulkarni but even the all-rounder can’t stop the flow of runs as he concedes a boundary first ball. New Zealand move to 72/0 in the 10th over of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:12 pm

Umesh strays on the pads now, and Guptill has no problem clipping it fine for another boundary. Good over this for New Zealand, 68/0 after nine

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:11 pm

Guptill plays a late, uppish, cut over the first slip for another boundary. This is fine batting by the right-hander now

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:08 pm

Tom Latham brings up 200 runs in the ongoing five-match ODI series against India. He has been the most consistent batsman for New Zealand on the tour

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20162:01 pm

DROPPED! Change in pace by Umesh, Guptill goes for the hit, miscues and the diving Mishra fails to hold on after getting left hand to it. Could have been a spectacular catch by Mishra. Guptill survives. New Zealand 49/0 after seven overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:54 pm

Still no Hardik Pandya, who picked three wickets on ODI debut, as Dhoni persists with Kulkarni. New Zealand cruising at 42/0 after five overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:51 pm

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:49 pm

Guptill is not shying away from taking the aerial route. Another one off the toe end of the bat but enough to clear the ring, and get a boundary

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:47 pm

Another slower delivery and another boundary for Latham. The left-hander leans into the drive and finds the gap on the off-side. This is a fine start by the visitors on a surface which is looking good for batting. New Zealand 32/0 after four overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:45 pm

Kulkarni continues, and concedes a boundary first ball. Tries the slower delivery and Latham eases it through covers for his first boundary of the innings. New Zealand 28/0 after 3.1 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:44 pm

Edge, and it will race for another boundary. This is a scratchy start by Guptill, just one assured by the right-hander so far. New Zealand 24/0 after three overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:43 pm

Just over mid-on. Guptill living dangerously, continues to throw his bat at everything and the find the toe of the blade. Cross-seam from Umesh and the miscued hit sails just over Amit Mishra

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:39 pm

And, again. Width on offer by Kulkarni and Guptill smashes it through the off-side for the third boundary. This is an erratic start by Kulkarni. New Zealand 16/0 after two overs

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:39 pm

Guptill putting pressure on Kulkarni. Pitched up again, and the right-hander makes good connection to clear the ring and get the second boundary of the over

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:37 pm

Uppish and effective. Guptill throws his bat at the slightly-pitched up delivery, gets the toe end of the bat and manages to slice it over point for the first boundary of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:36 pm

Dhawal Kulkarni, coming in for Jasprit Bumrah, introduced from the other end. His accuracy, and movement, will come handy for the hosts in these conditions

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:34 pm

Umesh keeps it tight in the first over. The seamer, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday, starts with a maiden. New Zealand 0/0 after one over

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:32 pm

New Zealand openers Martin Guptill and Tom Latham out in the middle. Umesh Yadav to make first use of the hard white ball. Visitors need a good start here to put early pressure on the hosts. Middle-order is yet to get going, and the role of top-order becomes very crucial on this surface

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:09 pm

As far as India are concerned, the hosts keep faith in Axar Patel and the only change is “not 100%” Jasprit Bumrah making way for Dhawal Kulkarni

IND XI: RG Sharma, A Rahane, V Kohli, M Pandey, MS Dhoni, K Jadhav, H Pandya, A Patel, A Mishra, D Kulkarni, U Yadav

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:08 pm

NZ XI: M Guptill, T Latham, K Williamson, R Taylor, C Anderson, BJ Watling, A Devcich, M Santner, T Boult, T Southee, I Sodhi

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:05 pm

Team News: New Zealand have gone in with three spinners for this game while India bring in Dhawal Kulkarni for Jasprit Bumrah. The yorker-specialist, Dhoni said at the toss, is not 100% for this game

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:04 pm

Toss: New Zealand finally get a coin spin in their favour, and Kane Williamson has elected to bat first in Ranchi. Both captains happy with the outcome as Dhoni, because of the possibility of dew, was looking to field first

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 20161:00 pm

As far as the team front is concerned, India can shake-up a bit and include Jayant Yadav as Axar Patel has failed to make an impression in the three matches he has played so far. Surprisingly, Kedar Jadhav, with six wickets, has been Dhoni’s go-to man so far

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 201612:59 pm

Pitch apart, a loud crowd is expected in Dhoni’s hometown. So not only India, Virat Kohli, pitch, New Zealand will have to deal with a very vocal Ranchi crowd today

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 201612:58 pm

Pitch: Sunil Gavaskar feels it’s very dry, and the spinners will enjoy some purchase from this strip. The former Indian skipper feels win the toss, field first should be the approach for the hosts

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 201612:57 pm

Talking about Ranchi, one gentleman can’t be ignored. MS Dhoni. The Indian skipper was among the runs in the last match where he stitched 151-run partnership with Kohli, and made an individual contribution of 80

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 201612:57 pm

Virat Kohli and Tom Latham have been the players to watch out for from both teams. Both have contributed consistently with the bat, and would be expected to do more of the same in a crucial match in Ranchi

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 201612:56 pm

It has been an exciting series so far. India won the opener in Dharamsala with ease, lost the second match at the Feroz Shah Kotla before bouncing back to register a thumping win in Mohali

Sahil Malhotra October 26, 201612:55 pm

The fourth ODI between India and New Zealand is about to get underway in Ranchi. The hosts, 2-1 ahead, are a win away from pocketing the series and extending their dominance over the visitors in the home series
