India have victory in their sights and a 3-0 series lead in the offing with England in tatters at 182/6 despite fifties by Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. At close of play, Bairstow remained unbeaten even as night watchman Jake Ball fell by the wayside in the final over of play. The visitors are still trailing by 49 runs.
Earlier in the day, Virat Kohli smashed his third Test double ton with all of them as the Indian skipper to solidify his position as the best batsman this year. He was ably supported by Jayant Yadav who also brought about his maiden Test century.
As it happened
1630 hrs IST: GONE! Jake Ball falls on the third delivery of the over. A top spinner from R Ashwin and it pitches just outside the off stump. Takes the faintest of edges on its way to Parthiv Patel’s gloves and England end day on 182/6. Still trail by 49 runs
1629 hrs IST: Not done just yet. Jake Ball will face start to yet another over and it is to be bowled by R Ashwin.
1627 hrs IST: Could be the final over of the day and Ravindra Jadeja has the ball in his hand. Jake Ball to ride the wave in these closing stages.
1622 hrs IST: Jake Ball comes on as the night watchman and immediately rides the nightmare that is facing R Ashwin. A carrom ball greets him on the second delivery and it moves away like a ripping leg break. Somehow, Parthiv Patel holds on.
1616 hrs IST: Ben Stokes has been given out to R Ashwin who is bowling from around the wicket. Soft-signal is out. Went for a reverse sweep and it looks out. Hit his glove and then goes off his boot into Murali Vijay’s hands. And third umpire says OUT! Ashwin strikes!
1614 hrs IST: Another Yorkshire player, Jonny Bairstow brings up his fifty. Flicks a full delivery by R Ashwin down the leg side for a single.
1605 hrs IST: Ben Stokes goes for the reverse sweep to Jayant Yadav but misses it completely and the ball goes over Kohli at first slip but it was off the forearm or bicep. No trouble.
1600 hrs IST: R Ashwin has Jonny Bairstow taken by the fielder at short leg. Went down the pitch but the flat delivery spins enough to beat the inside edge by some distance. Umpire Oxenford gives it out and immediately rues it as England review. That was a terrible call.
1558 hrs IST: Two big hits by Ben Stokes to Jayant Yadav. A four and a six. First one is almost a nothing ball. Short and wide and sends it through point. Next ball, hammered over midwicket for a six!
1543 hrs IST: Jonny Bairstow is given out off Ravindra Jadeja but England go for a review. And no need to go for the DRS as Jadeja over-stepped. England keep their one review. It was an appeal for a catch behind to Parthiv Patel and the TV replay highlights that it was clearly missing the bat. Nowhere near the bat.
1540 hrs IST: 10th ball after drinks and Jayant Yadav has Joe Root walking back! Jayant strikes to pick up his first wicket and the big wicket too. The ball was pitched full and quickly on the middle stump and Root finally misses one. Beats the inside edge and Root walks back as the umpire raises his finger. England are 141/4
1533 hrs IST: DRINKS! England have done well in this hour of play after the Tea break. It has been a great battle between the batsmen and the spinners. Joe Root holding on and has England going strongly after early wobble. Jonny Bairstow providing the comfort.
1524 hrs IST: Four balls later, Jayant has Root caught leg before and it has been given not out. Caught on the back foot and the spinning delivery has the set England batsman trapped. Jayant looks convinced and his confidence has Kohli opting for the review. No edge involved. It was pitching in line and had no edge but it was going over the stumps. India lose both their reviews.
1522 hrs IST: Jayant Yadav comes into the attack and there’s a huge appeal off his third delivery. Big appeal for catch at short leg. Root went for a flick and looped it to the close in fielder. Not out by the umpire and Kohli opts not to take the review. And wise decision. No bat on that.
1506 hrs IST: Jonny Bairstow takes a single by playing the ball to midwicket. And that brings up England’s 100
1503 hrs IST: DROP! Virat Kohli lets that one go from the clutches of his left hand and Jonny Bairstow survives. Went for a reverse sweep to R Ashwin coming from around the wicket. Gets the glove but Kohli can’t hold on at first slip as he moved to his right and the ball came to his left.
1456 hrs IST: FIFTY! Joe Root brings up his fifty. A reverse sweep and with lots of wristwork involved, Root gets to his half century. A very well played inning despite the turbulence all around.
1455 hrs IST: Swept away by Joe Root from the off stump and does well to keep it low enough to find the deep midwicket region. Goes for a four
1447 hrs IST: Ravindra Jadeja getting plenty of spin on the ball and Joe Root doesn’t look comfortable. Beats the outside of the bat continuously. Fascinating stuff
1430 hrs IST: Play underway in the final session of play on Day 4. Jonny Bairstow is the new man in and Ravindra Jadeja to finish his over. And the trend of England’s woes to the spin continues. Eventually, a productive over for Jaddu – a wicket maiden.
1408 hrs IST: GONE! Murali Vijay takes a one-handed catch in the close fielding position and Moeen Ali walks back for a duck. Flat on middle stump and Moeen Ali goes for a flick but doesn’t get much on it. Vijay takes the catch at leg gully. England are 49/3 and that’s Tea.
1405 hrs IST: All happening here! Big appeal by all Indian players as Joe Root strides forward to R Ashwin. Appeal for a bat, pad and catch but it didn’t get any bat on it. Double sound possibly of bat hitting the pad. Not leg before either as the ball was going on to miss the stumps completely. India lose one review.
1403 hrs IST: TEAM NEWS FOR THE FIFTH TEST IN CHENNAI: Mohammed Shami and Wriddhiman Saha have been ruled out with their respective injuries.
1359 hrs IST: GIVEN OUT! Ravindra Jadeja with a massive appeal for leg before on Alastair Cook and the umpire raises his finger. REVIEW TAKEN. There is no edge. DRS says it was pitching outside off and going on to hit the stumps. The decision stands and India have the big wicket of Cook. England are 43/2.
1356 hrs IST: Huge appeal by India for a catch at short leg. Joe Root stepped out of his crease and looked to go big but the ball spun viciously to dismiss all those plans. Gets the thigh pad to be taken. Chance for a run out too but it isn’t taken. The umpire gives it not out and rightfully so.
1350 hrs IST: R Ashwin from the other end and he nearly gets Alastair Cook. Played uppishly by the England captain but it fails to find the fielder. That was a rather poor shot but evades the extra cover fielder.
1346 hrs IST: And Virat Kohli introduces spin in the form of Ravindra Jadeja. Second ball of the over and Joe Root punches it through short extra cover for a boundary. Thereafter Jadeja with two gorgeous deliveries. Pitches on middle stump and beats the outside edge. Plenty of turn. Make that three beat of the bat in the over. Appeal is turned down but that was very close.
1342 hrs IST: Alastair Cook joins the run scoring party with a boundary of his own. Once again width on offer by Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and cut away on the backfoot. Lots of width for the England skipper to rock back and send it to the boundary despite Umesh Kumar’s dive
1341 hrs IST: Bhuvaneshwar Kumar gets the ball to move away but Joe Root follows it right till the end and hammers it for a square drive through point. Lunged forward on the front foot and the ball goes racing away to the boundary. Pure timing on that
1329 hrs IST: BOUNCED! Umesh Yadav bangs it short and it climbs up to Joe Root who goes on to his back foot after dropping his gloves and forcing the ball towards safety to pick up a single. This strategy worked really well for Shami in Mohali.
1322 hrs IST: Joe Root is off the mark with a thick outside edge off Umesh Yadav. It is good length outside off and takes the edge to run away through the gully region.
1312 hrs IST: GONE! And that’s a dreadful start for England. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar gets the second ball of the inning to nip back in and the centurion from the first inning is gone on the very first ball. Struck him flush on the front pad and replays point out that it was going to be given out had it been reviewed. The duo did consider a review after a quick chat but decide against it. England are 1/1
1309 hrs IST: Indian team are out in a huddle to defend their strong 231 run lead. Can England get a draw from this situation? Would be tricky with the ball spinning viciously and the visitors bound to be tired by now. Anyhow, there is Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings to start the effort. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar to open the bowling effort.
1300 hrs IST: GONE! Bhuvaneshwar Kumar goes for another big hit to Adil Rashid but gets a top edge and is holed out in the deep. India are bowled out for 631 and lead by 231 runs.
1258 hrs IST: Luck clearly on India’s side at the moment. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar gets a thin edge and it finds the gap between the keeper and first slip to race away to the ropes for a boundary. India are 230 to the good at 630/9.
1256 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar in the middle now and the runs haven’t ceased. Both take turns to smack Chris Woakes for boundaries. Both slog shots but they all count!
1246 hrs IST: GONE! Virat Kohli tries to take the aerial route and play it over extra cover for another boundary but is taken in the deep. He looks disappointed even after the 235 as James Anderson holds on. Wankhede stadium, despite the loss of wicket, is all up in adulation of India’s Test skipper. Chris Woakes gets the wicket. India are 615/9 and England have both the set batsmen gone in a matter of 15 minutes. India are ahead by 215 runs.
1232 hrs IST: GONE! Jayant Yadav falls for 104 and there’s standing ovation for him by the Wankhede crowd. Goes for a big hit after coming down the track but he misses the Adil Rashid delivery completely and is subsequently stumped by Jonny Bairstow. Splendid knock and the partnership of 241 runs comes to an end. India are 605/8
1231 hrs IST: India go past the 600 run mark and the lead is now inflated to over 200 runs. Kohli gets India beyond the 600-run threshold with a boundary off Chris Woakes.
1223 hrs IST: HUNDRED! What a moment for Jayant Yadav. He scores his maiden Test hundred in only his third match for India. First Indian to score a Test century at number nine. Brilliant innings
1221 hrs IST: Jayant Yadav is on 99*. He is one short of his maiden Test hundred. He already has two for Haryana in first-class cricket. This is only his third Test for India
1214 hrs IST: Six runs from the first over after Lunch. Jayant hit on the helmet by a Woakes delivery. India move on to 585 for the loss of seven wickets. Lead is worth 185 runs. Rashid to bowl from the other end for England
1210 hrs IST: Players back on the field for the second session of play in Mumbai! India resume at 571 for the loss of seven wickets. Chris Woakes will bowl to Virat Kohli
1150 hrs IST: India will be looking to score some quick runs in the second session and give their bowlers enough time to bowl out England in the second innings
