Set a modest 169-run target, India lost debutant Karun Nair early, and found going tough against some quality bowling early on, but KL Rahul-Ambati Rayudu fought out the initial phase to see the side home.

As it happened

1930 hrs IST: ALL OVER! India beat Zimbabwe to take lead in the ODI series

1912 hrs IST: Rahul hits one powerfully through covers to bring up the 150 for India. He, on debut, moves to 84

1855 hrs IST: India need just 36 runs to take a 1-0 lead over Zimbabwe in the three-match series

1845 hrs IST: FIFTY for Rayudu. Struggled at the start, looking good now. India 133/1

1835 hrs IST: Mere formalities left in the contest now as India, comfortably head towards the total

1827 hrs IST: 100 up for India in the 26th over of the chase. The second fifty coming at a better rate – 51 balls

1820 hrs IST: ON debut, FIFTY for KL Rahul. Takes 57 balls to reach there. India 94/1

1817 hrs IST: Cremer into the attack and Rahul cuts him in the gap. The debutant moves into the 40s with that hit

1814 hrs IST: Rayudu charges Chatara and hits him over the ring for another boundary. The right-hander made sweet connection there

1810 hrs IST: Rahul, in particular, showing a lot of character. He’s determined to see the side home today. India need 92 runs from 29 overs

1807 hrs IST: Rayudu and Rahul make a move on. Some risky shots there but they were rewarded with boundaries

1801 hrs IST: Short and Rahul cuts it uppishly for another boundary. He moves to 32 off 47. This was only the fifth four of Indian innings

1800 hrs IST: FIFTY up for India. Rahul-Rayudu stand worth 42 off 83 now

1755 hrs IST: Rahul has been very disciplined with his approach. Not chasing deliveries outside off and solid in defence

1744 hrs IST: Rayudu is slowly getting confidence. Dealing in singles but fighting it out

1737 hrs IST: India are operating at a slower pace than Zimbabwe but have managed to keep wickets in hand. Rayudu and Rahul fighting out against some quality bowling by the hosts

1724 hrs IST: Rayudu is struggling in the middle. Kept quiet by some quality bowling by the hosts. The right-hander has managed just five runs off 22 balls he has faced so far

1720 hrs IST: SPIN! Cremer introduces himself into the attack. He’ll bowl his leg-spin

1717 hrs IST: India 27/1 after ten overs. At the same stage, Zimbabwe managed 32 runs on the board but lost an extra wicket

1710 hrs IST: Chatara operating a nice channel. Attacking the stumps, and generating nice angles

1707 hrs IST: Rahul drives, and drives it elegantly to the ropes for a boundary. Was in perfect position to play that shot

1700 hrs IST: Rayudu is the new man in for India. They didn’t get off to an ideal start in the chase. Zimbabwe seamers doing a fine job

1655 hrs IST: WICKET! Nair cuts and cuts it straight to Raza off Chatara. Forgettable debut for the opener. Out for 7. 11/1

1644 hrs IST: Pitched up, and Nair creams it through covers for his first boundary in ODIs. Muzarabani kept it tight before bowling one right in the slot for the cover-drive

1640 hrs IST: Two debutants KL Rahul and Karun Nair out in the middle for India. Chatara with new ball for Zimbabwe

1555 hrs IST: India bowl out Zimbabwe for 168 in Harare. (Chigumbura 41; Bumrah 4/28, Sran 2/42)

1552 hrs IST: WICKET! Chatara hits it high in the air, Rayudu does well to complete the catch and give Bumrah his fourth

1548 hrs IST: WICKET! Slower one and Chigumbura is cleaned by Bumrah for 41. They again check for the no-ball but the seamer was fine on this occasion. 167/9

1540 hrs IST: Bumrah gets rid of Chigumbura, but replays suggest he over-stepped. Wicket no.3 denied!

1534 hrs IST: WICKET! Cremer tries the cheeky scoop, misses and Kulkarni hits the stumps. 156/8

1527 hrs IST: We are into the last five overs, Zimbabwe 148/7. Bumrah into the attack now

1520 hrs IST: WICKET! Mutumbami hits the Chahal delivery to Rahul in the deep. First ODI wicket for the leggie

1517 hrs IST: Mutumbami makes good connection and the ball races to the fence. Sweet sound when the ball met the bat. Zimbabwe need more such hits in the powerplay. Only seven overs left in the innings

1507 hrs IST: India’s fielding hasn’t been good today. Two drops, and one missed run-out opportunity so far

1455 hrs IST: WICKET! Raza drags the Sran delivery back on to his stumps. Zimbabwe lose their sixth, 115/6. The length wasn’t right for the big heave he attempted off the seamer. Second wicket for the left-armer who has been impressive throughout the day

1448 hrs IST: We are into the last 15 overs of Zimbabwe’s innings now. Dhoni turns to his new-ball bowler Sran. One wicket here will put the hosts back on the mat. Chigumbura and Raza are doing a fine job so far, and it’s important they bat most of the last 90 deliveries

1440 hrs IST: Zimbabwe’s immediate target should be to bat out 50 overs and push the scoreboard in the process. Anything around 200-run mark is not likely to test India

1430 hrs IST: 100 up for Zimbabwe in the 32nd over. Chugumbura and Raza are in the middle for the hosts

1427 hrs IST: Kulkarni returns for a second spell. He was impressive with the new ball where he managed to get a wicket

1421 hrs IST: If Zimbabwe continue at this rate, they will to struggle to reach even 200 from here

1417 hrs IST: Zimbabwe have not only struggled to find boundaries but even singles are difficult to come by. Credit to Indian bowlers for bowling tight lines and keeping the batsmen under check

1410 hrs IST: WICKET! Ervine with the release shot but he finds Fazal in the deep. First wicket for Axar Patel. 77/5

1400 hrs IST: Zimbabwe in desperate need of some runs, and a steady stand. No boundary has been scored in the last ten overs. Disciplined effort by the Indian bowlers

1354 hrs IST: WICKET! Success for Bumrah after an erratic last over. Sibanda out caught-behind. 69/4

1350 hrs IST: Chahal, playing his first ODI for India, is into the attack now

1345 hrs IST: Eventful Bumrah over. Ervine is dropped by Rahul off first ball, free-hit ball goes for four wides, the free-hit goes miles up in the air and Sran drops. After a poor start, the seamer bowled four uplayable deliveries to end the over on a high

1340 hrs IST: FIFTY up for the hosts in the 16th over. Ervine and Sibanda in the middle

1338 hrs IST: Axar varies his pace, and “bahut badiya Baapu” says Dhoni from behind the stumps

1332 hrs IST: Not much turn for Axar so far. It’s a hard, and well-rolled strip. Unlikely that Axar will get some purchase

1328 hrs IST: WICKET! Change of ends, and Bumrah castles Chibhabha with the first ball of his 2nd over. 47/3

1323 hrs IST: Just one over for Bumrah, and it’s time for spin. Axar Patel into the attack now

1322 hrs IST: Sran with a long first spell and he continues to do what he has done succesfully since morning – trouble the batsmen with terrefic lines

1320 hrs IST: India have whitewashed Zimbabwe in the last two ODI series played. It’s a happy hunting ground for India debutants. We have three today

1315 hrs IST: Bumrah into the attack and he starts with a no-ball. No damage done with the free hit

1314 hrs IST: Average powerplay score in Harare is 42, and Zimbabwe manage only 32/2. Ideal start for India as Dhoni, at the toss, spoke about making most of the morning start

1310 hrs IST: WICKET! Kulkarni finds Masakadza’s edge and regulation catch for Dhoni behind the stumps. 30/2

1254 hrs IST: Kulkarni too sustaining pressure from the other end. Good start by India’s new-ball bowlers

1250 hrs IST: Sran has been rushing Zimbabwe batsmen with fine lines at brisk pace

1242 hrs IST: Kulkarni is moving the ball but has been a tad short in his two overs so far. Zimbabwe 11/1 after three

1237 hrs IST: WICKET! Two close shouts and Sran gets the wicket with the third. Traps Moor in front. Zimbabwe 8/1

1233 hrs IST: Sran to bowl from the other end, and he starts with a sharp in-swinger. That looked very close

1231 hrs IST: Conventional field for the seamer. He’s operating with two slips and a gully

1230 hrs IST: Chibhabha and Moor the two openers for Zimbabwe; Kulkarni with new ball for India

1227 hrs IST: Out walk the two teams for the series opener. MS Dhoni leads his young brigade to the middle

1214 hrs IST: The team sheets are out. Here’s a look at the two XIs

IND XI: L Rahul, M Pandey, K Nair, A Rayudu, K Jadhav, MS Dhoni, A Patel, D Kulkarni, J Bumrah, B Sran, Y Chahal

ZIM XI: C Chibhabha, H Masakadza, R Mutumbami, V Sibanda, C Ervine, S Raza, P Moor, E Chigumbura, G Cremer, T Muzarabani, T Chatara

1205 hrs IST: Three debutants for the visitors as KL Rahul, Yuzvendra Chahal and Karun Nair receive their maiden ODI cap

1200 hrs IST: TOSS! Dhoni calls heads, and heads it is. India have elected to field first in ‘cool’ Harare conditions

1148 hrs IST: It’s a hard pitch, nicely rolled with some grass. There are couple of cracks but not much. First 30 minutes of play would test the batters. After that, it will be a great wicket for cricket

11:47 am: Debuts for Chahal and Rahul today. The young due received their maiden India ODI cap earlier in the day

The build-up

There’s MS Dhoni, and there’s buzz

“IF YOU had told me Dhoni was going to be the biggest cricket superstar ever back then, I would have never believed you. Today he earns more than Novak Djokovic.” Douglas Hondo couldn’t have probably put it better. You find him seated alone on one of the many metal stands—the kinds you find at school playgrounds in India—near the practice area at the Harare Sports Club. He’s just got done with bowling in the nets to the Zimbabwe team. At the other end of the ground, MS Dhoni has just begun descending the steps of the Indian dressing-room, and there’s an inevitable buzz around the ground.

Fresh off the holster, young guns get a chance to fire

For major part of IPL this year, the Virat Kohli-AB de Villiers news won’t die down. The duo broke records in the first half of the tournament and then they took RCB to the final. A team which was in danger of being knocked out ended up as runners-up.

India tour of Zimbabwe lacks star power, not talent

MS Dhoni-led young India reached Zimbabwe on Thursday for their three ODIs and T20Is. While the tour, like it has been since years now, is again a low-key affair with most India stars resting ahead of the packed home season.
