India start the five-match ODI series against New Zealand with a comfortable six-wicket win in Dharamsala on Sunday. Chasing a modest 191-run target, India lost openers early after brisk start but it was that man Virat Kohli who hit an unbeaten 85 to anchor the side home. Earlier, after electing to field first, India were on the money with the ball as new-ball combination of Hardik Pandya and Umesh Yadav rattled the visitors early. Apart from Tom Latham’s 79* and Tim Southee’s brisk fifty, no Kiwi batsmen failed to make mark. For India, Pandya’s 3/31 stood out on a good bowling day by the hosts.

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20167:40 pm

Kohli with two exquisite cover-drives. One was cut off by Santer in the deep but the second was in the gap for a boundary

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20167:32 pm

WICKET! Mix-up and Dhoni is well short of his ground. There was no run there but Dhoni went for it after gently defending the ball, Kohli responded with a couple of steps before turning to take his end. Dhoni, by then, had crossed the half-way mark and had no chance of sprinting to safety. India lose their fourth wicket, 162/4

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20167:26 pm

DROPPED! Kohli checks his shot at the last moment, it goes straight back to Southee but the seamer fails to collect on the follow-through. India 158/3 in the 28th over

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20167:26 pm

Short again and this time Kohli waits helps it over the keeper for another boundary. Watches the ball right till the end and makes good connection

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20167:25 pm

Southee starts the over with a short one and Kohli pulls it away for a boundary. Picked the length early and pulled it off the front-foot, brings up the FIFTY-run partnership with Dhoni off 47 balls

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20167:24 pm

India just 41 runs away from taking 1-0 lead over New Zealand in the five-match series

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20167:21 pm

FIFTY for Virat Kohli, his 37th in ODIs. The right-hander reaches there with a single as India look comfortable at 147/3 after 26 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20167:01 pm

Kohli and Dhoni in the middle for the hosts now. Asking rate under control as India need 73 off 172 balls, seven wickets in the kitty

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:58 pm

Kohli is in the groove now. Two glorious boundaries take him closer to FIFTY. One straight down the ground while the second was creamed through the covers region

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:52 pm

WICKET! Half-tracker by Sodhi and Pandey hits it straight to Williamson in the ring. He could have hit it anywhere but found Williamson waiting for the comfortable catch. India lose another one after steady stand, 102/3

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:49 pm

Kohli flicks one in the gap, runs another double and brings up the 100 for India in the 19th over of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:46 pm

With boundaries not coming, both Kohli and Pandey are running well between the wickets. Taking the quick singles and converting ones into twos

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:41 pm

Spin in operation now as Ish Sodhi bowls with Tim Southee. Two right-handers in the middle, and it is a matter of time before we see spin from both ends

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:40 pm

A quiet phase after departure of the Indian openers. A modest target means there won’t be any panic in the dressing room, even if runs don’t come at a brisk pace

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:23 pm

Can’t afford to bowl him there. Bracewell errs, bowls one on Kohli’s pads and the right-hander has no problem clipping it for his second boundary of the innings. India 73/2 in the 14th over of the chase

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:22 pm

Manish Pandey is the new man in and he rises with a Neesham delivery and muscles it to the ropes to get off the mark in fine fashion

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:17 pm

WICKET! Neesham finds Rahane’s edge and Ronchi takes a brilliant diving catch behind the stumps to give New Zealand the second breakthrough. India 62/2

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:09 pm

Decent stride forward and Kohli drives it in the gap for a boundary. India’s no.3 off the mark in fine fashion. 61/1 in the 11th over of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:05 pm

Way down the leg side, five wides and FIFTY comes up for India with those extras. Rohit back in the hut but still a very good start by India in the chase

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:04 pm

Virat Kohli walks out to a loud cheer. Fresh from a good run in the whites, he would like to keep doing the same in the Blues

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20166:01 pm

WICKET! Rohit misses the big heave on the leg-side, and is trapped in front by Bracewell. The right-hander was quiet for some time and was looking for the release shot off the seamer. He fails to put bat to ball and was right in front of the stumps. India 49/1

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20165:55 pm

Southee off the attack after a wicketless opening spell. Neesham into the attack now. New Zealand need to find a wicket here, India cruising at 46/0 in the 9th over

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20165:46 pm

India move to 40/0 in the seventh over of the innings. By this time, India had lost three wickets in the first innings. Top start by both Rahane and Rohit

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20165:43 pm

Short again from Bracewell and six more to Rahane. The short-ball plan is not clearly working for the visitors as both Indian openers have no problem pulling them away

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20165:40 pm

Flat and big! Rahane joins the act now. Similar shots by both Indian openers, and both generating similar results. India make a move on after getting their eye in

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20165:38 pm

After a watchful start, Rohit breaks free as he hits one all the way for a maximum. Short, and he makes good connection to clear the ropes with ease. India 25/0 in the fifth over

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20165:23 pm

And, Rahane breaks his bat. Goes for the pull, the ball meets the lower half of the blade and the blade loses major chunk of the wood

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20165:21 pm

Doug Bracewell to share the new ball with Southee. India 4/0 after one over

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20165:17 pm

Outside edge and the ball races the fence. So both teams get similar starts – boundaries off the outside edge

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20165:16 pm

New Zealand in a huddle and out come the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane for the 191-run chase. Early wickets would hold key for both sides. India would not like to lose while New Zealand need them in the modest defence

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:33 pm

From 7/65, New Zealand recover to post 190 against India in Dharamsala. Latham carries his bat through, and contributes 79 to the team’s total. He is the 10th batsman ever to carry bat through in this format. For India, debutant Hardik Pandya was pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/31

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:32 pm

India bowl out New Zealand for 190 in Dharamsala. (Latham 79*; Pandya 3/31, Jadhav 2/6)

Sodhi the last man to be dismissed as the right-hander fails to read the Mishra googly. It brushed his pad before crashing into the stumps
Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:29 pm

SIX! Latham targets the other side of the wicket now as he uses the sweep to add six more runs. Times it sweetly and had enough power behind the shot

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:29 pm

Latham dances down the track and goes inside-out over covers. Gets a boundary and moves into the 70s with that shot. Not an easy shot to play against the leg-spinner

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:21 pm

WICKET! Southee goes for big hit, miscues & Manish Pandey takes the catch. Mishra strikes for India. The tail-ender walks back after scoring 55 runs, and stitching a 71-run partnership with Latham, both at a brisk pace. New Zealand 177/9

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:16 pm

FIFTY for Southee, his first in ODIs. Top knock by the tail-ender. New Zealand 166/8. It’s a job well done by the visitors. Now their bowlers at least have something to bowl at

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:14 pm

Umesh gets his line wrong again, and Southee helps it to the ropes for another boundary. Moves to 48 off just 38 balls

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:13 pm

SIX! Southee is picking his spots. Uses the pace of Umesh and pulls it all the way. Moves into 40s. Partnership between Latham and Southee worth FIFTY now. These runs would hurt India

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:09 pm

Southee gets another boundary and takes his score to 35 – his highest in the format, and it couldn’t have come at a good time for the visitors. 151/8 after 39 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:06 pm

SIX! Southee makes good use of the feet again as he takes the Mishra googly on the full and manages to clear the fielder in the deep. The partnership is worth a handy 37, and it has come at a good rate

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:04 pm

SIX! Axar gives the ball some air and Southee makes most of it. Charges down the track and makes good connection to hit it way back into the stands. First maximum of the innings takes New Zealand’s total to 135/8 after 37 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20164:00 pm

Southee certainly knows what he’s doing. Goes after Mishra now and gets another boundary. He has hit three already and two have come off good deliveries. New Zealand 127/8 after 36 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:57 pm

This won’t please Bumrah as Southee, after getting dropped, hits the seamer for a couple of boundaries. These are handy runs for the visitors

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:56 pm

Dropped! Bumrah bangs one in short, Southee fails to control the pull, top-edges but Yadav makes a mess in the deep. He has taken a couple of catches today, including a blinder, but dropped an absolute dolly now. Bumrah, wicketless so far, scratches his head

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:49 pm

Mishra, with his first wicket of the day, becomes the fastest Indian spinner to pick fifty wickets in the format

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:44 pm

WICKET! Mishra ends New Zealand’s resistance as he gets rid of Bracewell. The right-hander charged the tossed-up delivery but could only chip it to Ajinkya Rahane who took a comfortable catch diving forward. 106/8 after 31.5 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:36 pm

FIFTY for Latham, and 100 for New Zealand. Fighting hand by the left-hander who continued to lose partners but held one end for the visitors

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:32 pm

Latham approaches a hard-fought half-century. He has Bracewell for company and New Zealand would pin their hopes on their opener to guide them to a challenging total. As of now, not enough on the board. 95/7 after 28 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:28 pm

India’s spin-twins Mishra and Patel in operation now. New Zealand 84/7 and need a special effort to post a fighting total in Dharamsala

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:15 pm

Chance, but put down by Jadhav. Bracewell clipped one off his pads, failed to keep it down and Jadhav, diving to his right, failed to collect it cleanly. New Zealand 73/7 after 22 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:11 pm

New Zealand seven down, and Dhoni introduces Yadav for the clean-up job. He picked two early wickets in his opening spell and has chance here to make some additions

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:04 pm

Latham continues to fight a lone battle for the visitors as he remains unbeaten on 30, scoring about half of New Zealand’s total so far. Disappointing performance by the Kiwis batsmen in the first match of the series

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:03 pm

Bracewell survives the hat-trick ball and a brilliant Jadhav over comes to an end. New Zealand 65/7 after 19 overs of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20163:01 pm

2/2 for Jadhav. Santner goes for the cut, faint edge & Dhoni takes it neatly behind stumps. 65/7. This is brilliant move by Dhoni and Jadhav will now bowl the hat-trick ball. New Zealand in deep deep trouble

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:59 pm

WICKET! Jadhav experiment works for India as Neesham chips one straight back to the bowler. New Zealand lose their sixth wicket for 65. India into the lower-order now. This is heading towards an early finish in Dharamsala

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:57 pm

Two left-hander in the middle explains why Dhoni went for Jadhav and not his regular spinners Mishra and Axar. Ball turning in would have made life slightly easier for both Neesham and Latham. New Zealand 65/5 after 18 overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:56 pm

Kedar Jadhav with the ball! And Neesham survives a loud shout. Too full to be swept, the left-hander went for it and missed. Dhoni and the bowler were up for the appeal in a flash but the umpire wasn’t interested

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:42 pm

Top effort by Pandya on ODI debut. Has already picked three wickets and still has four overs to make additions to his tally. Dhoni gives him an extended spell as the seamer takes mark to bowl his seventh over. New Zealand 53/5 in the 15th over of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:33 pm

WICKET! c Yadav b Pandya, again. No.3 for the debutant as Ronchi hits one straight Yadav in the ring. This is catching practice for India and New Zealand, with half their side back in the hut, find themselves in real trouble at 48/5, in the 13th over. Top start by India, after electing to bowl first in Dharamsala

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:28 pm

Latham just eases one straight down the ground. Didn’t try to hit it hard, presents the full face of the bat and times it to the ropes. New Zealand 48/4 in the 12th over

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:26 pm

Luke Ronchi is the new man in for the visitors. One more wicket will put a lot of pressure on New Zealand

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:25 pm

WICKET! Yadav is everywhere. After doing the job with the ball, he takes brilliant catch to get rid of Anderson. Pandya bowled one a tad fuller, it was there to be driven and Anderson went after that. The left-hander was looking to clear Yadav in the ring but the seamer times his dive with perfection and collects the ball neatly with both hands. New Zealand 43/4

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:21 pm

So Pandya wasn’t off the attack. Dhoni gives the seamer a change of ends and he comes around the wicket to left-hander Anderson. New Zealand 42/3 after ten overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:17 pm

Pandya is off the attack and Dhoni introduces the very accurate Jasprit Bumhrah into the attack. New Zealand 41/3 at the end of nine overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:15 pm

Short, and Anderson cuts it away. The left-hander is off the mark with a boundary. New Zealand move to 41/3 in the ninth over of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:12 pm

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:10 pm

Still some batting to come but New Zealand in desperate need of a steady stand. One more wicket will make the job easier for Indian spinners later in the day. New Zealand 36/3 in the 8th over

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:05 pm

When hitting the right lines and lengths, Yadav is a treat to watch. He’s getting a nice shape going against the right-handers and has definitely earned himself an extended spell today

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:04 pm

Anderson lets one go to the keeper and survives the hat-trick ball. India on top of New Zealand in Dharamsala

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:03 pm

2/2 for Yadav and he will now bowl the hat-trick and on strike is New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:02 pm

WICKET! Peach….Yadav hits the good length again, the ball shapes away, just enough to take Ross Taylor’s edge. Dhoni takes a comfortable catch behind the stumps to get rid of the right-hander for a golden duck. New Zealand 33/3

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20162:00 pm

India seamers have bowled at ideal length for this wicket. They haven’t been too short or too full, just around the good-length mark. The carry off the pitch is doing the job for them at the moment

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:56 pm

WICKET! Yadav joins the act now as he gets rid of New Zealand skipper cheaply. Williamson, looking to cut one all the way, went after the short delivery but couldn’t get enough elevation on that. The ball flew off his bat and was safely collected by Amit Mishra at third-man. New Zealand 29/2

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:51 pm

In search of swing, Pandya pitches one further up but Latham has no problem creaming it through covers for a boundary. Nine coming from the over, New Zealand 27/1 after four overs

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:50 pm

Pandya is in the rhythm early in the spell. Running in hard and bowling at decent speeds. Carry from the wicket is helping his cause in the middle

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:48 pm

Nearly another one for Pandya in his second over. His line and length is disturbing New Zealand batsmen in the middle. Williamson, looking to leave, gets some part of bat on ball while shouldering arms. That could have gone anywhere, even back on to the stumps. New Zealand 18/1 in the fourth over

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:45 pm

Kane Williamson walks out to the middle. This is a fine start by India as they manage to pick a wicket in the second over of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:42 pm

WICKET! Pandya picks his first ODI wicket in his very first over. After conceding three boundaries, the seamer didn’t panic and was rewarded. The delivery, directed at the stumps, squared up Guptill and took the right-hander’s outside edge. Rohit Sharma takes a sharp catch in the slips to give India early success. New Zealand 14/1

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:39 pm

On the up and creamed through the off-side. Third in the over and first convincing boundary by Guptill

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:38 pm

Another boundary for Guptill, and this one too not convincing. The right-hander was looking to leave that one and the ball took the lower-half of the blade and raced to the ropes

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:38 pm

Fuller length from Pandya, Guptill goes for the drive and the ball flies off his edge to the ropes for the first boundary of the innings

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:37 pm

Hardik Pandya, 215th player to represent India in ODIs, to bowl from the other end. Dhoni, as he has done often, keeps Bumrah as the first change option

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:35 pm

And Yadav gets some movement off the pitch early in the spell. Hits a good length, generates a nice shape, at decent pace, and goes past Guptill’s tentative defence. New Zealand 1/0

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:33 pm

With very little in it for the bowlers, this promises to be a high-scoring fixture. Dew could play a major role in the evening session but if it stays away, expect plenty of runs in Dharamsala

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:31 pm

Yadav starts a wide in India’s 900th ODI. India are the first team to hit the 900 mark in this format

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:31 pm

New Zealand openers Martin Guptill and Tom Latham are out in the middle. Umesh Yadav to commence proceedings with the ball for India. Guptill had a forgettable Test series while Latham impressed in patches

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:25 pm

The two teams line-up for the national anthems before action starts at the picturesque venue in Dharamsala. Stunning backdrop of the Himalayas

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:24 pm

The teamsheets are out. Here’s a look at the two XIs

Santner and Ish Sodhi the two spinners for Black Caps. The enjoyed bowling in India during the ICC World T20. The squad wears a balanced look

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:04 pm

New Zealand are playing three seamers and two spinners. The visitors have rested their leading seamers Trent Boult and Matt Henry. In come Tim Southee and Corey Anderson

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:03 pm

Toss: India get the coin toss in their favour and they will bowl first. Dhoni feels dew could play a role later in the day. For India, Pandya makes his ODI debut and three players missing out are Jayant Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni and Mandeep Singh

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 20161:00 pm

This is the 900th ODI match for India, a special gold coin will be used for the toss today

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 201612:59 pm

Pitch: Very little in it for the bowlers. Very hard and Sunil Gavaskar feels it’s like a road…A pitch where the batsmen will score runs but dew could play a role here. Win the toss, bowl and cash in on the dew is what Gavaskar feels should be the right approach

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 201612:57 pm

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 201612:53 pm

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 201612:46 pm

India’s batting mainstays are among the runs as Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli scored in the three-match Test series recently. India’s Test skipper Kohli enjoys the fifty-over format, and he loves playing in home conditions

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 201612:45 pm

India have tweaked their ODI squad a bit as regular spinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are rested for the five-match series and in come the players who have done well on A tours and Ranji Trophy. Notable additions are Hardik Pandya and Kedar Jadhav. Bumrah will be the bowler to watch out for and his accuracy, at start and death, will force the Kiwis to be on their toes, and also watch their toes

Sahil Malhotra October 16, 201612:44 pm

India start the ODI series high on confidence as the hosts whitewashed Black Caps to rise to No.1 spot in ICC Test rankings. Men in Blue, in whites, were on top of their bowling and batting game in the Tests and outplayed the opposition in all departments in Kanpur, Kolkata and then in the final match in Indore
