The torrential rain that has plagued Chennai this past week has affected the travel plans of the Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Mumbai City. The franchise had travelled to the Tamil Nadu capital to play their away game against hosts Chennaiyin FC on a partly flooded Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Just a day after the visitors were humbled to a 3-0 defeat, their scheduled flight to Kolkata for their next game was cancelled owing to the harsh weather.

The original schedule saw the team and its corresponding support staff, numbering 42, booked for a flight to Kolkata to play their final league game against defending champions Atletico de Kolkata on December 4.

However, the heavy rain that has been rated the worst the city has received in a century, has crippled all activity at the Chennai International Airport.

Secondary plans for travelling to the next venue has been tentatively scheduled for the following morning, should aviation operations be in effect. Meanwhile the team has been advised against leaving their hotel, given the flooded condition throughout the city. With regard to the ISL game on Tuesday, the match commissioner, referees and coaches inspected the pitch and once all parties agreed, the match took place.

However should there have been some reservations, the game would have been postponed for an hour, with the possibility of a second hour’s delay if needed for conditions to clear. Earlier in the tournament, incidentally in Chennai itself, the game against NorthEast United was interrupted for 55 minutes due to close-range lightening.
