Selectors, on Monday, announced the 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match test series against New Zealand that starts on September 22. Much of the speculation in the build-up to the announcement was surrounding Rohit Sharma and what the selectors decide about his participation in the series.
Although Sharma has been one of Indias most successful batsman for India in limited overs cricket, he has struggled to find any form in his test career after an explosive start in 2013 when he scored back to back centuries. In the recently concluded West Indies tour, Sharma played in only one game out of the four matches. He could only manage to score 9 and 41 runs in the two innings.
Selector Sandeep Patil later said that their aim is to give everyone a fair chance to prove themselves. According to him, Rohit Sharma has not been given an extended run in the test format.
With the exception of Stuart Binny and seamer Shardul Thakur, the squad is pretty much the same as the one that traveled to West Indies.
While many on social media were happy with the team selection, there were quit a few who felt that Binny’s exclusion was unfair. A vast number of people on twitter also called for the inclusion of Gautam Gambhir and expressed surprise at the inclusion of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan.

India pick a largely predictable team for the series against New Zealand. That they can do so is a measure of confidence.
