The new head coach of the Indian cricket team has to be eligible on nine counts as the BCCI advertised for the post – for the first time since its inception in 1928 – on Wednesday.
The advertisement has been put on public domain and is available on http://www.BCCI.tv. Out of the nine clauses, however, Criterion No. 6 asked for the knowledge in Hindi and other regional Indian languages.
“Communication skills befitting the coach of an International team are mandatory along with the ability to effectively convey the right messages and must demonstrate proficiency in English. It is desirable to communicate in Hindi and other regional Indian languages,” the advertisement mentioned. Does this rule out overseas aspirants? BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke begged to differ. “We have said Hindi is desirable, not mandatory. No way it rules out overseas applicants; absolutely not,” he told The Indian Express.
Asked why the BCCI has inserted such a clause, Shirke said: “Many players from very rural backgrounds don’t understand English. That’s the reason, nothing else.” A story is doing the rounds that Ravi Shastri, who worked as team director till the World T20 and the assistant coaches under him, Sanjay Bangar and Bharat Arun, are keen to apply.
Bangar has also been appointed the coach for the short tour of Zimbabwe.
A cricket board insider, however, affirmed that the selection would be made through a proper and thorough process.
Interested candidates should apply before June 10.
