BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur, and the BJP MP from Hamirpur, is set to take over as president on Sunday. Here is a low-down on the Special General Meeting.
Why is this election for BCCI president held now and who is likely to win?
Anurag Thakur, who is BCCI’s secretary now, is the sole nominee and is all set to become the BCCI president. He will be the third president in the last 16 months. Shashank Manohar resigned from his post as BCCI president on May 10, which triggered the need for this election. Jagmohan Dalmiya’s death in September 2015 necessitated the election of Manohar. And now Manohar’s resignation, and subsequent shift to become the ICC’s chairman, has ensured BCCI will have its third president in 16 months. The BJP Member of Parliament from Hamirpur, Thakur, was always a front runner since Manohar stepped down.
When and where will the election held?
Sunday, at the special general body meeting of the board in Mumbai. “Thakur has been nominated by all six full member units of the East Zone. He will be officially declared elected as the President of BCCI for the remaining term 2014-17 at the Special General Meeting,” BCCI said in its statement on Saturday.
What’s the procedure to be selected as president?
As per BCCI’s by-election laws, a candidate needs just one proposer from the zone whose turn it is to elect the president. It was East Zone’s turn this time and all the six associations that includes Cricket Association of Bengal, Jharkhand Cricket Association, Orissa Cricket Association, National Cricket Club of Kolkata, and Tripura Cricket Association have nominated Anurag Thakur as their candidate.
Is there a popular candidate for the secretary post once Thakur becomes president?
Yes, Ajay Shirke, an industrialist who is currently the Maharashtra Association president, is set to become the BCCI secretary. The president usually nominates secretary and it is learnt that there will be no other candidate interested for that post. Shirke had an excellent rapport with Manohar, and also shares a close bond with Thakur. Shirke has served as BCCI treasurer under N Srinivasan’s presidency but resigned after the IPL match fixing scandal broke out.
What other matters will the SGM discuss?
The SGM will also approve appointment of BCCI’s new CEO Rahul Johri and a new chief financial officer is also to be appointed.
