A YERWADA Central Prison undertrial, who was brought to Sassoon General Hospital for treatment, escaped on Monday morning. After nearly five years, the problem of inmates escaping during medical treatment has returned to haunt Pune Police and the hospital administration.
Bundgarden Police booked historysheeter Somnath Vishnu Raut (25) under Section 224 of Indian Penal Code. Raut has been charged with several crimes and also has a MCOCA slapped on him. PD Karande, police sub inspector with Bundgarden Police, said that Raut was brought to Sassoon on September 12 after he complained of a stomach ache.
“He was admitted in the general ward and police were guarding the area. He was handcuffed to the bed. However, on Monday morning, he managed to flee,” said Karande.
In May this year, Raut and an accomplice were nabbed by Pune Rural Police for robbing an individual and decamping with valuables worth Rs 1.2 lakh. On May 30, police picked him up along with accomplice, Shrikant Nana Dorkar (20). Subsequently, he was booked under MCOCA by police and sent to Yerwada Prison.
“We are investigating his whereabouts,” said Karande. Such incidents involving inmates have happened before too at the Sassoon Hospital. In September 2011, Yogesh Raut, the prime suspect in Nayan Pujari gangrape and murder case of 2010, had fled from Sassoon when brought there after he complained of body ache. He was again caught later in May 2013.
In 2010, two ‘sandalwood smugglers’,Subhash Gore (41) and Dagdu Bhosale (48) from Barshi, escaped from Sassoon Rohidas Anant Chorage, 35, facing trial in a 2008 murder case escaped from Sassoon on February 5 2011. Santosh Shivaji Rashinkar (32) facing murder charges escaped on April 28, 2011 from Sassoon.
