To check the smuggling of narcotics by tourists — mainly youngsters — heading to Goa for holiday from Pune, Government Railway Police is conducting surprise checks aboard trains heading to Goa. Passengers allege that those taking Goa Express or Poona Express to reach the tourist hotspot often are faced with the trouble when the police go about indiscriminately checking passengers’ luggage.

Officers with Local Crime Branch of Pune GRP, who have the jurisdiction to conduct such searches aboard the trains, say that they do it to check two sorts of violators — pickpockets and drug couriers.

They say that they are doing this in the light of an increase in the incidents of pickpocketing as well as drug transport in trains.

“It’s not new at all. We do it regularly and it’s not only in trains to Goa. The campaigns are conducted to nab pickpockets and other criminals. In the instance of Goa Express, it’s likely that our men are searching for drugs couriering as they have been multiple cases of couriering that have come to light,” said Inspector Nandkumar Ghorpade, adding that the they never harass anyone during the searches.
