LIKE every year, Ganesh mandals in the city are dealing with varied themes ranging from social issues, mythical tales, scientific concepts to the need of water conservation and traffic management in the pandal decoration. There are numerous mandals too which have chosen live performances by artists to drive home the message. Apart from the “five manache Ganpati”, which prove to be major crowd pullers, several smaller mandals too have managed to attracts devotees by virtue of their creative ideas and decorations.

Natu Baug Mandal in Shaniwar Peth has installed a small replica of the proposed plan of Chabahar Port which aims to link India with Afghanistan through Iran. Kalbhairav Tarun Mandal in Ganesh Peth has given the message of water conservation through a moving plan which explains the ideas of water supply and conservation for a town.

In Pimpri-Chinchwad, several mandals have chosen social messages over religious ones. For example, Nageshwar Mitra Mandal has created a live act propounding traffic discipline and safety. Nearby Bhairav Nath Mandal is creating awareness about “drug addiction” among children. “It’s fun to see various mandals dealing with various social themes. It shows there is awareness and sensitivity towards various issues. This is the reason I take my kids to see the pandals,” said Dinkar Chavan, a resident of Model Colony.
