MLA among 12 rescued after raft capsizes in Ichalkaranji

The incident took place around 1.45 pm when Suresh Halwankar, the local MLA of the BJP from Ichalkaranji had come for the immersion of a Ganesh idol which was being worshipped at his home.

A major tragedy was averted after 12 persons including a Member of Legislative Assembly from Ichalkaranji were rescued after a makeshift raft they were standing on capsized during a Ganesh immersion ceremony in a water-filled quarry in Ichalkaranji Saturday afternoon.

The incident took place around 1.45 pm when Suresh Halwankar, the local MLA of the BJP from Ichalkaranji had come for the immersion of a Ganesh idol which was being worshipped at his home.

The immersion was being done at an open quarry currently filled with monsoon rainwater. The site has been designated for idol immersion as an alternative to Panchganga river.

The station duty officer from Shahapur police station said as many as 12 persons including Halwankar, the chief officer from Ichalkaranji municipal council, the local heath officer and some senior police officials boarded a makeshift raft to reach a deeper point in the quarry to immerse the idol, when the raft capsized due to imbalance.
Inspector SB Patil of Shahapur police station said” “Fortunately some lifeguards, staff from police station were present. They all jumped into the water took every one out safely.”
