A man allegedly murdered his wife, mother and two daughters at Kadnur village in Jat taluka of Sangli district of Maharashtra on Saturday morning. The assailant, identified as Bharat Kundlik Irkar (45), surrendered before the Sangli police some time after reportedly committing the murders. Police said that the deceased include Bharat’s wife Sindhubai (40), mother Sushila (63), daughters Rupali (19) and Rani (16).

The incident shocked the small Kadnur village which has at least 500 houses. Senior police officials including district superintendent Dattatraya Shinde visited the crime scene and probe is on to confirm the motive behind the incident. Police prima-facie suspect that Bharat, a farmer by profession, killed his family members following a domestic dispute.

Investigation so far has revealed that Bharat was working on his farm with Sindhubai when he allegedly had a quarrel with her, following which he allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon, which caused her death.

Later, he took his mother and daughters to the spot where he killed his wife and killed them in the same manner. He then went to the Jat police station and informed the police about the incident.

Police said that Bharat’s elder daughter Rupali was a student of commerce at a college in Jat while Rani was studying in class 11. He also has two sons who had been out since Friday night to participate in Ganesh festivities. Police said the two boys were not present at home when the murders took place.
