In a bizarre case, a 14-year-old boy has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a hen in Pakistan’s Punjab province of Pakistan, a media report said Tuesday. Mansab Ali, a resident of Jalapur Bhatian police station Hafizabad, some 200km from Lahore, told police that his neighbour Ansar Hussain “abducted” his hen on November 11 and “raped” it.

“The hen died while being sexually assaulted by Hussain. Two persons — Nasrullah and Tufail – witnessed this act,” an FIR quoted the complainant as saying. Station House Officer Sarfraz Anjum told The Express Tribune that the suspect had been arrested after a medical examination of the hen confirming the sexual assault.

“Hussain has also confessed to his crime. The boy said he did it out of sexual frustration,” he said. The reports of swabs collected from the hen were still awaited. The suspect has been booked, the police said.

India is the place where sexual assault is rapidly increasing. Rape in India is one of India’s most common crimes against women. According to the National Crime Records Bureau 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012, but experts agree that the number of unreported cases of sexual assault brings the total much higher. Out of these, 24,470 were committed by parents/family, relatives, neighbors and other known persons implying that , men known to the victim committed 98 per cent of reported rapes. The latest estimates suggest that a new case of rape is reported every 22 minutes in India.

Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India.[1][2] According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2013 annual report, 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012.[3] Out of these, 24,470 were committed by someone known to the victim (98 of the cases).[4] India has been characterised as one of the "countries with the lowest per capita rates of rape".[5] A 2014 piece in The Lancet states that the "8.5 prevalence of sexual violence in the country is among the lowest in the world."[6] According to NCRB 2015 statistics, Madhya Pradesh has the highest raw number of rape reports among Indian states,[7] while Jodhpur has the highest per capita rate of rape reports in cities.[8] Several rape cases in India received widespread media attention and triggered protests since 2012.[9][10] This led the Government of India to reform its penal code for crimes of rape and sexual assault
