Porn clips on sale in Uttar Pradesh: Shocking, but not surprising

Rape porn: Could the trade in such clips be triggering a spate of rapes in parts of India?

The Times of India has reported on how videos of rapes are the latest hot-sellers in the underground porn market in Uttar Pradesh, and maybe other parts of the country too. However, this trend is hardly surprising, given that the so-called offline trade of pornographic clips usually deals in content that is otherwise not available online. Since even most of the porn sites now stick to a certain code of conduct when it comes to the content they host, a lot of the weird perverted stuff ends up on the darkweb or is shared peer-to-peer.

However, given that a lot of the crimes these days — from sexual attacks to assaults on people carrying what others think is beef — are all recorded thanks to proliferation of smartphones, it seems to be a natural progression for some of these clips to end up in shops.

Researching on porn in India for a story I wrote for the India Today Group some years ago, I found that mobile shops across Delhi and in the neighbouring areas openly sold porn clips. They were almost like a recharge, copied into the external memory cards for a small fee. A 4GB ‘recharge’ then would involve a mix of movies, songs and, of course, porn. Strangely there was no filter on what kind of porn was copied into these SD cards, and not all of it was the sort of stuff that could be hosted online without coming under the radar of international organisations working to clampdown on illegal porn.

Incidentally, there is rape porn online too. But a lot of that is staged, though that does not make it kosher.

The saddest part here is the fact that the trade in rape clips, often records of violent crimes that go unreported, is happening through shops. If this is so, then you can be rest assured that hundreds of such clips are making the rounds on WhatsApp and other such platforms where it is near impossible to track content.

Now, what really needs to be investigated is whether the trade in such clips could be triggering a spate of rapes in parts of India.
