The All India Tennis Association (AITA) could throw away India’s chances of winning the Olympic gold in tennis (‘AITA’s decision defies logic: Bhupathi to Maken’,IE,June 19). No doubt,Leander Paes is the top tennis player in India and once upon a time, both Paes and Bhupathi were the doubles champions. However,if we go by present form and performance,a team consisting of Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna is a better bet than Paes and Bhupathi. It would be especially difficult for Paes and Bhupathi to play together as they cannot see eye to eye. Since AITA can send two teams to the Olympics,it might make sense to send Bhupathi and Bopanna in one team, and Paes and Somdev Devvarman in another. The mixed doubles team should comprise Bhupathi and Sania Mirza.

President perfect?

WITH reference to ‘Take your time,NDA’ (IE,June 18),I entirely agree with the view that Pranab Mukherjee should not be allowed to go unchallenged for the post of president. As finance minister,he has failed to hold the economy together. There is no guarantee that he will make a competent president. So let this be an open contest.

THE names of several prominent persons cropped up for the post of president. Quite a few of these were superannuated figures. Now that Pranab Mukherjee has been named by the Congress as its presidential candidate and is likely to make it to Raisina Hill, the speculation and waiting will soon come to an end.

Racket wars

SAINA NEHWAL,who recently won the Indonesian Open Super Series, has brought cheer to badminton fans and rekindled hopes of winning bigger tournaments. Nehwal’s main handicap was said to be her stamina, but she appears to have worked on this. However, another test of her skill lies ahead — the All England tournament. Whenever badminton is spoken of in India, the names of Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand come up. Both have All England titles under their belts. Nehwal must also win the title to join their league.

Green shoots

THIS refers to ‘Green Expectations’ (IE,June 19). Given the global economic meltdown and the relentless ecological degradation, the back to back summits — the G20 summit in Mexico and the Earth Summit in Rio — are beacons of hope. The twin objectives of achieving decent economic growth and sustainable development, through green economics, common but differentiated responsibility and a shared vision, could receive a boost in the summits.
