Fed by torrential rains, all the rivers in Varanasi district including the Ganga, were on a rampage inundating around 3,000 villages and destroying crops in large areas. USSR, Japan spar

The Soviet Union reacted sharply to reports that the MiG-25 fighter plane, which landed in Japan some days earlier, was to be flown by an American transport plane to a military base for “careful study”. A Tass commentator described the development as indication of Japan’s continued unfriendly position towards the Soviet Union, a position which, according to him, was contrary to Japan’s national interest. A government spokesperson said Japan was undecided whether to return the plane flown by a defector pilot to the Soviet Union.

Thatcher in India

The leader of the British opposition, Margaret Thatcher was likely on arrive in Delhi a week later on a four-day visit. Mrs Thatcher will be a guest of the Indian government and was likely to meet several Indian leaders.

Mao’s last wish

The official Chinese press made public a last wish of Chairman Mao Zedong. This was a previously unpublished statement by Mao advising to “act according to the principles laid down”. It appeared in a front-page editorial in People’s Daily, Red Flag, and the PLA daily. The editorial explained the meaning of Mao’s last wish: “To act according to the principles laid down means to act according to Chairman Mao’s proletarian revolutionary line and policies… Throughout the period of socialism we must persevere in criticising the bourgeois, repudiating revisionism, restricting bourgeois rights and fighting against the capitalist rodents in the party”.
