October 8, 1976, Forty Years Ago: JP On Dialysis

Seventy-two persons died at Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital in Indore after drinking country liquor the previous night.

Jayaprakash Narayan, who was admitted to the Jaslok hospital, Bombay, on October 6 was put on dialysis. He will be put on dialysis every alternate day. He will also undergo “cystoseopic” examination of his urinary bladder which appears to be inflamed, Shanti Lai Mehta, director of the hospital and surgeon attending on Narayan, said.

Hooch Toll At 72

Seventy-two persons died at Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital in Indore after drinking country liquor the previous night. An official spokesman said 128 persons were admitted to hospital. Efforts were being made to the remaining 56.

Biju Patnaik Freed

Piloo Mody, MP, and Biju Patnaik have been released from detention, it is officially learnt. Mody told the foreign press that he had been well treated in jail. Former Gujarat chief minister, Babubhai Patel, who had been detained, was released on Wednesday evening.

Mine Rescue

An “all-out effort is being made to reach the dead-end of the third rise above 400-metre horizon of Sudamdih colliery, near Dhanbad, where some miners are believed to be trapped. An expert team which inspected the mine found the dead-end full of gas and the atmosphere very hot. The roof had caved in at many places. Attempts were being made to circulate fresh air and repair the damage. The death toll in the explosion mounted to 41 with the death of two more miners in hospital.

Salal Project Talks

The four-day Indo-Pakistan talks between the delegations led by the foreign secretaries on the Salal hydro-electric project on the Chenab ended in New Delhi with the two sides argeeing to resume negotiations in on October 19, a joint communique issued at the end of the talks said.
