Debt Of The Poor

The decisions by Sweden and Canada to cancel poor countries’ debts is viewed by developing nations as a breakthrough in the efforts to build a new economic order. Sweden announced at the UN that she had cancelled over $200 million in debts owed by India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Canada said it is in the process of cancelling $254 million in debts from developing countries. The question now is whether it will shame the major countries into equal generosity. The Carter administration is cautiously attempting to raise its foreign-aid contribution.

CPI On Indira

The CPI criticised the “calculated attempt’’ to revive “the personality cult of Indira Gandhi”. The political resolution of the party’s national council, released in New Delhi, said the country’s democratic system and political institutions were entering a period of crisis. The Congress was fully taking advantage of “this fluid and fast-moving situation” to prop up its eroded image among the masses by trying to project itself as the only national alternative to the Janata. The CPI also called for a “left and democratic alternative”. In a unanimously adopted resolution on the political situation, the party’s national council has said this “perspective” rules out both the consolidation of Janata power and restoration of Congress rule.
