In his pre-budget discussions with labour leaders, Union Finance Minister C. Subramaniam said the government was keen to evolve a strategy which would increase investment and generate more employment opportunities without leading to inflation. Trade unions urged the finance minister to take appropriate steps to prevent unemployment in industry due to lay-offs, retrenchments, closures and lock-outs. They said it was necessary to expand the employment base. They thought it was necessary to increase the purchasing power of the organised workers and review existing policies which have affected their earnings.
Sanjay Coy On B’day
The Youth Congress expressed itself against ostentatious celebration of Sanjay Gandhi’s birthday, which falls on December 14, in deference to his wishes. Gandhi himself disapproved of any kind of sycophancy. Individuals and organisations trying to bring out priced or sponsored publications or hold priced shows in connection with Gandhi’s birthday are going to be discouraged by all concerned, a spokesman of the YC said.
