Nazrul Islam dead
Renowned Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam died at the Post Graduate Hospital in Dhaka. He was 77. The gradually declining health of the poet, who was admitted to hospital on July 22 last year, started deteriorating on Saturday morning with the rise of temperature and attack of “bronchopneumonia”. The poet, whose family is in West Bengal, went to Bangladesh in 1972 after the liberation and the government conferred Bangladesh citizenship on him. The Bangladesh Government declared a national holiday and said that the national flag would fly at half mast for two days. Savyasachi, son of the poet, requested that his late father’s body be brought back to India to enable its burial at the poet’s ancestral place. It is understood that the request was conveyed to the Bangladesh government through the Indian authorities. Savyasachi, who lives in West Bengal, has left for Dacca to bring his father’s body back.
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi expressed grief on the passing away of Kazi Nazrul Islam. In her condolence message she said, “I am deeply grieved to learn that Kazi Nazrul Islam is no more. For years he was deprived of speech by ill health. But what he wrote in his active years made him an immortal of Bengali literature. His nationalist poems have stirred millions and inspired them to brave and selfless action. His death impoverishes both India and Bangladesh.”
