What prompted D G Vanzara to turn against the person whom he calls his God,Chief Minister Narendra Modi, and his close lieutenant Amit Shah?
In jail for six years as prime accused in three encounter killings, this sudden move by Vanzara just when Modi and Shah are readying for the move to Delhi has invited the charge of being driven by politics as well as a prelude to the disgraced police officer turning approver in the Sadiq Jamal fake encounter case.
For someone like Vanzara who is already accused of seven murders (Ishrat Jahan,Javed Sheikh,Amjad Ali Rana,Zeeshan Johar,Sohrabuddin Sheikh,Kauser Bi and Tulsiram Prajapati),it does not matter if one more is added, said a police officer on the Jamal case.
As for his resignation the 10-page resignation has since been rejected by the Gujarat government it comes just nine months before Vanzaras retirement. So while he has little to lose,a lot is at stake for the political masters he accuses of betraying him and the other policemen accused in the cases. One case said to be especially weighing on the minds of the Modi government is the Haren Pandya murder.
Till his arrest,Vanzara had been privy to all the goings-on in Gujarat since 2002,including major post-Godhra riot investigations which were handled by the Crime Branch, the Pandya murder and the Akshardham attack, apart from the fake encounters.
The accused in the murder of Pandya, who was a minister of state for home in the Gujarat government, have been acquitted and Pandyas widow Jagruti has accused Vanzara of letting the family of suspected mastermind,Mufti Sufiyaan Patangiya, escape. Patangiya had gone missing soon after the murder.
Insiders are also pointing at other clues to suggest that Vanzara, who claims to have been a tool in the hands of Modi and Shah, has turned a tool for others. They point to the praises he showered on Indira Gandhi in the preface of his last book,Rantankaar (Battlecry),dated October 31,2011,which was published in 2012. He lauded Indira and Sardar Patel, noting that the date he wrote the preface was both the death anniversary of Indira and the birth anniversary of Patel.
In the preface,Vanzara went on to credit Indira for keeping the country together and out of the unholy alliance of Maoist China and Terrorist Pakistan, adding: I feel blessed when bowing down before these nationalist heroes (Patel and Indira).
So has Vanzaras God changed?
