An upper caste Hindu man who had converted to Islam was hacked to death at Thirurangandi in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Saturday. Police said the victim, Faizal, 33, son of Ananthakrishan Nair, was to leave for Saudi Arabia on Sunday. An unskilled worker in Saudi, he had converted to Islam a year back.

Police said his wife and three children also embraced Islam recently when Faizal came home on leave. “This seems to be the provocation behind the murder. We are not naming any organisation at this stage of the probe, but certain persons who were opposed to conversion seem to be behind the murder,’’ police sources said.

After returning from Saudi Arabia six months back, Faizal had been living in a rented house with his family.
On Saturday morning, he was going to Thanur station in an autorickshaw to pick up his in-laws, said police. Four men on two bikes intercepted the autorickshaw and hacked him to death, they added.
