As former cricketer Madan Lal is set to hit the campaign trail in Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, the Congress has dissolved its youth wing there to quell protest over his candidature in place of potential nominee Narinder Thakur.
District Youth Congress president Neelam Thakur dissolved the Hamirpur block unit after the majority of its office bearers publicly opposed the candidature of Madan Lal in place of Thakur. Neelam Thakur informed about the decision through a press release on Tuesday night.
Protesters led by block president Karan Thakur described Madan Lal as an outsider and questioned the decision to field him from Hamirpur to take on Anurag Thakur, son of Chief Minister P K Dhumal. They supported Narinder Thakur, son of veteran Congress leader and former minister the late Jagdeo Chand.
Meanwhile,Anurag Thakur has said he does not see Madan Lal as a potential threat in the polls. I have no problem or a challenge of sorts from Madan Lal,or even Narinder Thakur. Whosoever contests against me will be defeated by a large margin, he told The Indian Express from Hamirpur. It is a crisis of confidence for the Congress which faces a revolt from within the constituency. I have all reasons to be
doubly confident about my partys victory.
