The CBI on Monday arrested a Kerala Police DSP in connection with assault on a journalist last year.
N Abdul Rasheed, the chief of Kerala Police Service Officers Association is currently posted with the NRI cell of the police. He is the second DSP arrested in the case after Santhosh Nair. Santhosh,a container fleet owner who allegedly hired the goons for the police officer, has also been arrested.
Rasheed was produced before a magistrate in Kochi who sent him in police custody for two days.
V B Unnithan,a reporter with Mathrubhumi, was attacked by goons on the night of April 16 last year. Police probe revealed that goons had been hired by Nair, who was upset with Unnithan for reporting alleged immoral activities involving a woman at a party attended by Nair and some other officers.
Though the Crime Branch said nothing immoral had taken place and that the woman was the wife of one of the officers at the party, four officers, including Nair, were suspended.
Nair allegedly sought the help of his friend Santhosh to arrange for goons to attack the reporter. Two weeks after the attack, the suspected leader of the gang was found murdered.
