A 40-year-old principal of a private school was beaten to death at her Patna residence on Friday for resisting robbery.

The incident took place at around 12.45 pm at the Pataliputra Colony residence of Ankur Public School principal Nilam Sharma, when she was alone. The house adjoins the lodge for schoolchildren.

Some unidentified people persuaded Sharma to open her house gate at the pretext of some official work and started ransacking the house after tying Sharma’s hands and legs with a rope. When she raised an alarm, the miscreants beat her up and left the house taking away cash and jewellery.

A schoolbus driver,Vinod Kumar, said: “When I knocked at the door around 1 pm after bringing back some students to the lodge from the school, she did not respond. When I called her on mobile phone,I heard the ring from inside the house. When we opened the house,we saw the teacher unconscious. She was bleeding from mouth.” Kumar said she died on way to a hospital in the colony.

Patna SP Jayant Kant said a case had been lodged and the police had started investigations.

“It looks prima facie a case of robbery but we have to investigate other angles including enmity with anyone,” he said.
