Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi expressed a wish and I&B Minister Manish Tewari fulfilled it promptly. The two were campaigning in Karnataka some time ago when they bumped into each other at an airport. Chiranjeevi told Tewari he wanted to attend the Cannes film festival once. The Telugu superstar said he had attended the Oscar ceremony but never been to Cannes. The I&B Ministry is one of the sponsors of the Indian contingent at Cannes, and as its head,Tiwari was slated to go to Cannes. But Tewari was of the view that presence of two ministers at the film festival would not be proper and therefore he opted out and asked Chiranjeevi to be there instead. Chiranjeevi, who is in London for the last one week,is learnt to have left for Cannes.
Fit for Politics
Weight loss surgery,it seems, can be a political unifier. Former BJP president Nitin Gadkari had undergone a much-publicised operation to reduce his weight some time back. Now it is the turn of Renu Jogi, wife of former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi. Incidentally,Renu,a sitting Congress MLA in the Chhattisgarh Assembly,is not obese as one would expect someone undergoing such a surgery to be. She went through the procedure apparently because she wanted to be fit to walk long distances while campaigning for the upcoming Assembly elections later this year.
Moves are afoot to organise a private dinner for Chinese Premier Li Keqiang at Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs Race Course Road residence on the day he arrives in India. Diplomats who had been instrumental in organising previous Chinese Premier Wen Jiabaos visit in 2010 have cited a precedence of such a dinner in the past. Singh has hosted such private dinners for selected heads of states or governments. US President Barack Obama and Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai have been among those in whose honour private dinners have been hosted. The format and the number of guests are still being worked out. Manmohan Singhs private dinner diplomacy, according to South Block insiders, has become a new gesture that is to be used sparingly to maintain certain exclusivity. It is likely that the Prime Minister would invite Congress president Sonia Gandhi and possibly party vice-president Rahul Gandhi as well for the event.
Gaffe-prone Sushil Kumar Shinde, the Home Minister, has never been alert enough to detect mistakes in his speeches written by officers, and has landed himself in extremely embarrassing situations. But on Friday,he noticed a small gap in the detail and was quick to point it out from a public platform. While reading out his speech at the investiture ceremony of the BSF,Shinde noticed that Jharkhand was missing from the states where BSF is deployed for anti-Naxal operations. He quickly paused and politely mentioned that Jharkhand should also have been included. Later,he said that he is often misunderstood and doesnt bungle as much as he is made out to be. Sometimes,I make a statement and some people at the higher level…those who are retired…misunderstand me…Some people misunderstand me and give a wrong impression (of me), he said.
