Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday caught up with former PM and old friend Wen Jiabao, who hosted lunch even though it went against China’s established practice.

The move, sources said, raised eyebrows within China’s political bureaucracy with word going out that the meeting should not be given much publicity.

Wen greeted Singh with a big hug, which again surprised Chinese officials as that is not the way it is done in China.

The two leaders reminisced their decade in power, trying to steer not just bilateral ties but joining hands during the global economic crisis to help G-20 take off. Wen had also promised and delivered on resolving the Kashmir stapled visa issue.

But the key point was the message Wen used to give Chinese officials. He used to tell them that “only if you see China-India relations in the Asian and global context will you find strategic opportunity”.

This message appears to have influenced the new Chinese leadership so far.

Wen,sources said, also had a nostalgic line to underline the bond. “We were like two drivers with steady hands on a wheel driving in the right direction,” he told Singh.
