The five Assembly constituencies going to Assembly polls in Pilibhit on March 3 have seen only one BJP leader campaigning in the area — the known face,Varun Gandhi,a Lok Sabha member from Pilibhit.

Only a week is left for campaigning in Pilibhit,Puranpur (SC),Barkhera,Baheri and Bisalpur seats, but apparently due to differences between the party’s senior leaders,no other leader, whether from the state or Delhi, has shown up for electioneering there.

On the other hand, though he is a star campaigner of the party,Varun has not gone anywhere else for campaigning, confining himself to Pilibhit and addressing over a dozen public meetings every day.

“Varun is sufficient to ensure the victory of party candidates; we do not need anyone else here,” said Pilibhit district general secretary of BJP Dheerendra Mishra. However,a senior leader said: “The party has fielded candidates in four seats of Pilibhit according to Varun’s choice, but he still does not want any other leader to campaign in Pilibhit. Naturally, other leaders are avoiding Pilibhit.”

Within Pilibhit also, sources said,Varun was staying away from Baheri because the candidate was not his choice. Varun refused to discuss the matter, but the party’s national vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said,“There is no issue between party leaders and Varun…” He said the party’s other star campaigners would go to Pilibhit soon for campaigning.

Varun Gandhi has, meanwhile, predicted that Samajwadi Party will emerge as the single largest party in the Assembly elections in UP. Taking a jibe at his own party,he said BJP had “55 chief ministerial candidates” and that he did not think the results would be “super magnificent” for the party. “I feel it is probably a truism that SP will be the single largest party in UP,but other than that I don’t know how much BJP,Congress and BSP will get,” he told NDTV.

BJP responded to his prediction with a remark that he is a “good psephologist” while its leader L K Advani declined to comment.
