The condition of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is suffering from pneumonia, continued to be critical on Saturday. He has been put on mechanical ventilation due to the worsening of respiratory tract infection.

According to doctors, the senior BJP leader is stable but the infection remains a cause for concern. “The patient’s condition is stable but he is having trouble in breathing. All vital parameters like liver, kidney, blood pressure are normal. His heart is stable but his lungs require support and that is why we are putting him on ventilation,” Dr Sampath Kumar, head of Cardiac Thoracic Vascular Sciences (CTVS) of AIIMS,said.

The 84-year-old leader was admitted to AIIMS on Tuesday with complaints of fever and chest congestion. Doctors later found that he was suffering from pneumonia.

UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi visited AIIMS to enquire about the health of the senior leader. AT AIIMS,Gandhi spoke to the doctors treating him and spent time with Vajpayee’s foster daughter Namita.
