Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was on Sunday discharged from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences after a 26 day stay at the Intensive Care Unit.

A host of dignitaries including the outgoing Speaker Somnath Chatterjee,Congress president Sonia Gandhi,J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah besides the entire BJP leadership had visited him in hospital. Vajpayee was admitted after complaints of chest infection on February 3 which was later diagnosed as pneumonia. He was kept on ventilator support as he was not able to breathe on his own and a tracheotomy was conducted on February 13 to ease his respiration process.

Meanwhile,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh underwent a chest X-ray on Sunday at AIIMS. “The report was fine,that’s why we allowed him to go back. He is doing fine and we have given him the green signal for all his activities,” Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Sciences chief Dr Sampath Kumar said. The doctors said the Prime Minister could make his first public appearance after the operation sooner than his scheduled meeting with the President of Benin on March 4.
