The Election Commission of India (ECI) has raised the maximum number of vehicles a candidate is allowed in his or her convoy to 10,up from three in the 2008 elections. The decision follows a meeting between political parties and the ECI,where candidates raised objections to the three-vehicles-per-convoy cap and urged the ECI to raise the limit.

Sources, however, said the limit of three vehicles per convoy will stay till the time of filing of nominations. According to the sources, each candidate, from the time of filing nomination to the end of elections, will be allowed up to 10 vehicles in his or her convoy.

The vehicles will have to be registered before they are used in a convoy. The permits of vehicles being used in a convoy will have to be displayed prominently on the windscreen, including the registration number and candidate’s name. Also, each vehicle will have only one flag, banner, poster or placard.
