The Badaun police Friday arrested three persons a day after a group of men allegedly attacked the district supply officer and made an attempt to torch his vehicle in Zarif Nagar area.

DSO Neeraj Singh had sealed a shop after finding its owner selling kerosene illegally, when a mob, allegedly led by local block development committee chairperson Neelam Gupta’s husband Subhash Gupta and shop owner Girish Chandra Gupta, attacked him.

Additional SP (Rural) Sheo Shankar Singh said Girish and his nephews Rinku and Tinku have been arrested and efforts were on to trace Subhash who allegedly incited the mob.

The DSO said he raided Girish’s shop following information that he was selling kerosene illegally. He,along with 10 other employees, including regional food officer Sanjay Gangwar, sealed the shop after finding kerosene stored in the shop although Gupta had no licence.

Singh also said he had asked Gupta to open up his godown adjacent to the shop for a search, but he refused. As Singh called up a videographer and was about to break open the godown,Subhash arrived there with a group of local people.

Subhash and others attacked the DSO and other employees and forced them to leave. The mob smashed the glass of the DSO’s car and sprinkled kerosene on the vehicle. They would have torched the car had he not escaped, alleged the DSO.

Badaun SP Manzil Saini said no attempt was made to set the DSO on fire or torch his vehicle. The mob attacked him and his team members and a case under relevant sections of the IPC,including attempt to murder, had been registered, she said.
