The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has issued notices to prominent politicians, including Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar,BJP leader Gopinath Munde,Maharashtra Congress president Manikrao Thakre,Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil and Maharashtra Forest Minister Patangrao Kadam, who are members of Sukhada-Shubhada Cooperative Housing Society in Worli here, asking them to remove unauthorised additions and alterations made in their flats.
These notices have been issued under section 53(1) wherein irregularities and illegalities were found in the building. These people have been asked to restore such illegalities within a month, Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte said.
The violations include unauthorised construction below the building, additions and alterations carried out without approval from the civic authorities, and unauthorised use of shops and the basement.
The shops on the premises were constructed after the building was granted extra FSI (floor space index) and were meant to be convenience shops and daily needs stores. However, they were amalgamated and used as party offices, a senior civic official said.
These are grave violations of the building construction norms. This society was built on land earlier owned by Mumbai Police. Later it was taken away from the home department and given to politicians for constructing posh flats, said social activist Amit Maru, who had complained about the violations to the BMC.
Keshav Upadhyay, who handles Mundes media relations, confirmed the receipt of the BMC notice. There is no major violation of norms. The members will adhere to the decision of BMC, he said.
In Mundes case, the BMC has objected to a glass panel in the flat,Upadhyay added.
