‘Tortured’ by headmaster,teacher kills self

A contract teacher employed at a government school in Purnia died after setting himself on fire in the school premises. In his dying declaration the teacher said he was being “mentally tortured” by the headmaster of the school.

A contract teacher employed at a government school in Purnia died after setting himself on fire in the school premises. In his dying declaration the teacher said he was being “mentally tortured” by the headmaster of the school.

The police said the incident took place on Monday morning when Ranjit Kumar (35) reached the Ufrail Middle School as usual. The teacher,belonging to a scheduled caste community,went inside the school’s bathroom,doused himself in kerosene and set himself afire. As some students raised alarm,villagers gathered and took him to a hospital. Kumar,who had suffered over 90 per cent burns,was admitted to Katihar Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Patihar SP Kim said: “The teacher,in his dying declaration,said he was being tortured by the headmaster,who was booked for abetment and under the SC/ST Act provisions. It is a case of suicide.”
