The Tamil Nadu Assembly banned the use of mobile phones inside the House following a direction by Speaker D Jayakumar on Monday,a decision said to be prompted by the incidents dubbed as porngate in the Karnataka and Gujarat Assemblies.

The ban is applicable for all — ministers,MLAs,officials as well as journalists covering the proceedings.

Lockers have been made available for members to deposit their handsets before entering the Assembly, while other facilities will be put in place for journalists reporting from the Assembly, said the Speaker in a statement. Pay-per-use BSNL phone facilities will be set up within the premises for the members and they will be provided with smart cards worth Rs 100.

Though the move was influenced by the Karnataka controversy where a few ministers were caught watching porn clippings on their phone, there was an incident in the state Assembly where a DMK member was suspended for 10 days after he was caught recording the furore inside the House on his phone.
