Tamil Nadu Assembly Thursday demanded India to seek temporary suspension of Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth body and insisted on a ‘complete’ boycott of next month’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Colombo by the Centre, respecting the “sentiments and opinion” of the state’s people.

Stepping up pressure on the Centre on the Lankan Tamils’ issue amidst growing chorus from political parties and some human rights groups for India’s boycott of the event, the Assembly “unanimously” adopted a resolution to this effect.

It also urged New Delhi to initiate steps to seek “temporary suspension” of Sri Lanka from the league of Commonwealth Nations till the island nation grants equal status to Tamils living there.

“Respecting the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu and the unanimous opinion (therein) India should completely boycott the meet. There should not even be a symbolic representation from the country in the upcoming CHOGM and it should communicate its decision to Sri Lanka immediately,” the resolution said.
