A group of six youths attacked and ransacked the Kalighat police station in Kolkata in the early hours of Friday and injured five police personnel. All six claimed they were members of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) — the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress party. The incident took place at a short distance from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence. The police have made seven arrests in the case on the basis of a complaint lodged by Manjushree Majumdar, the TMC councillor of ward 83.

The trouble began around midnight Thursday when the group entered into a scuffle with workers of Kolkata Municipal Corporation near the Kalighat Temple Road, which was closed for an ongoing construction work. The group, travelling in a car, insisted on passing through the particular road. When the workers resisted, the youths started beating them up,saying they were members of TMCP,according to the police.
