Raj HC asks state to explain tapping of lawyer’s phone

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan High Court on Saturday called for an explanation from the state home department over the alleged interception of phone calls of Ajay Kumar Jain,the defence lawyer in Dara Singh encounter case. The order came on Jain’s plea,which challenged the state government’s authority in putting his phone on observation. The petition said phone tapping cannot be done by government except in the interest of public safety or in case of a public emergency. “Since none of the two conditions as prescribed under the law occurred,therefore the action of the state government has been challenged,” Jain’s counsel Abhinav Sharma said.

Former governor of Uttar Pradesh dies

HYDERABAD: Freedom fighter and former Governor of Uttar Pradesh B Satyanarayana Reddy,86,died at a private hospital here this morning. The veteran politician was being treated for a lung disease at the private hospital. Hailing from Shadnagar in Andhra Pradesh’s Mahbubnagar district,Reddy faced arrest as part of the ‘Quit India Movement’.

Judge suspended over graft charges

VARANASI: Another case has been filed against Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal at a local court here by a BJP woman worker seeking action over his alleged sexist remarks during a meet. BJP worker Meena Choubey moved the court of CJM Amarnath Kushwaha and sought action against Jaiswal for “insulting” women by his remarks during a function at a college in Kanpur recently.

Woman immolates self over dispute

BHADOHI: A 52-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze after a spat with her husband in Davanpur Samdha village. After being thrashed by her husband Dangar Harijan,Prabhawati poured kerosene over her body and and set herself on fire,police said.
