First she spent crores to make sure that no one could avoid her towering presence, but now Mayawati is dipping into the state exchequer to cover up her statues. This exercise has little to do with ‘modesty’,but is being carried out to protect the statues from the sun, rain and the droppings of disrespectful birds.

A huge amount of public money is being spent on digging up the granite floor of the Rs 6-crore Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Prateek Sthal in Gomti Nagar up to facilitate the construction of pillars for putting up canopies over the statues of Mayawati,Kanshi Ram,Bhimrao Ambedkar and Ramabai Ambedkar — two on either side of the road. Engineers involved in the task said the work will cost around Rs 50 lakh and directions have been issued to complete it by March 31.

Incidentally, this is where Mayawati’s original statue was changed because it was15-feet tall, while her mentor Kanshi Ram’s statue was 18-feet high. It is not known how much this change cost. All statues here are worth around Rs 50 lakh

Already, four 35-feet-high iron pillars have been erected around the statues. They are being covered with Rajasthani Bansi Paharpur stones.

While engineers admit that the exercise shows lack of planning and is a waste of money,Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) Joint Director (Land and Development) SB Mishra refused to comment.
