Days after two youth ran their car over a teacher in Haryana’s Sonepat district, allegedly after he caught their friend cheating in examination, one of the accused, arrested on Monday, claimed that it was an accident and not murder and that they had drinks together before the incident took place.

Vikram Singh has alleged that the teacher,Rakesh Kumar (34),had also called up the girl friend of the other accused,Hari Om,and passed some lewd remarks and “extended objectionable proposal,” police officials said.

Both the accused were friends with the teacher. Vikram Singh and Rakesh are residents of Harsana Kalan village in Sonepat.

The police said the three met in Sonepat on April 5 and consumed liquor. Hari Om then asked the teacher to help his girlfriend clear the National Open School examination. “Though Rakesh was deputed as one of the invigilators at the examination centre,he was not on duty in the room, where the girl was. Rakesh took the girl’s phone number from Hari Om,called her and allegedly used objectionable language,” a Haryana Police official said, quoting Vikram Singh.

The girl later called Hari Om and narrated the entire incident. “An agitated Hari Om jumped into Vikram’s Santro car and tried to stop Rakesh, who had just left on his scooter. He entered into an altercation with the teacher and asked him to stop, but Rakesh kept moving. It was during the altercation that the car’s front portion hit the scooter from the side making Rakesh lose balance and fall,” the police official said, adding that Hari Om was driving the car.

However,Rakesh’s brother,Mukesh Kumar has alleged that the duo killed the teacher after he refused to agree to their request of allowing the girl to cheat in the examination. “We have to take cognisance of the complainant. Further course of action shall depend on the evidence, witnesses and circumstances, which led to this incident,” Malik said.
