A sweeper in a government hospital in Barmer cut off a one-year-old boy’s little finger while removing the intra-cath on his wrist as the child was being discharged and preparing to go home.

The incident took place at the district hospital on Tuesday. Running short of staff, the hospital had no one to attend on the child,Sadiq Khan, after being discharged. As his impatient family asked the hospital staff to quickly release the child,a sweeper posted in the ward tried taking off the fixtures on him.

While removing bandages on his right hand,he accidentally cut off the child’s little finger. After realising his mistake, the sweeper panicked and threw away the chopped finger into the waste-bin.

After coming to know of it,the hospital staff started searching for the finger but were yet to find it. Though the hospital administration has admitted negligence, only junior level staff — three male nurses and the sweeper —have been suspended and no action taken against the administration yet.

A three-member team headed by Additional District Magistrate Arun Purohit is looking into the matter. The child is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
