At a recent function of the Indian Meteorological Department, one long-serving officer told his colleagues that there was only one way to survive in a government office without being transferred to a remote location. “Work so hard that you make yourself indispensable to your boss, and therefore when your transfer order is supposed to come,it is he and not you who will work to stop that,” advised the gentleman, who said he had remained in one office for more than 30 years without being transferred. The advice went down well with everyone but Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal, who joked later that it did not work with politicians. “However hard one may work, you cannot retain your position in the Government for that long,” he said. With elections round the corner,Sibal had a lot of sympathetic listeners.
