Surat teen tries to set self on fire to protest demolition

In this case,Surat police officials intervened in time and saved the girl.

A 14-year-old girl sprinkled kerosene on her body and tried to set herself ablaze to protest the demolition of her home by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). This is the second such incident in a week in Surat after five members of a family died after setting themselves ablaze in Rajkot,protesting their eviction.

In this case,Surat police officials intervened in time and saved the girl. The police have detained her family members,including father and brother. The girl was later released as she is a minor.

The incident happened when SMC officials went to Ekta Nagar slums in Rander Zone area on Wednesday to carry out the demolition. As slum-dwellers protested,the girl,on her way back from school,saw her mother lying unconscious at the door of her house which was being demolished. She then went into her house and doused herself with kerosene. However,security guards of the SMC and police officials intervened in time.
