Internal rift in the state Congress was exposed as supporters of two party leaders exchanged fire at the party’s state headquarters here Friday afternoon. The firing took place even as B K Hariprasad, the newly appointed AICC general secretary in charge of the state, was inside the party office meeting state leaders to explore possibilities of government formation in the state.

The firing,in which one person was injured, took place following an altercation between the supporters of Dhanbad legislator Mannan Mallik and Anup Singh, state Youth Congress president and son of Congress Legislature Party leader Rajendra Prasad Singh.

According to initial reports, those involved in the firing were bodyguards of the two leaders. The reason was not known immediately but, sources said,it could be related to a previous clash between the two groups on June 19.

“Mannan Malik’s bodyguards started firing in the air. Anup’s people followed, doing the same from the balcony of the headquarters. A few cars in the area were damaged,” said an eyewitness.

The condition of Mohammad Aslam, who was shot in the foot,is stable. According to Malik,Aslam was his supporter. “I had told Rajendra Prasad in the past that his son wants to harm me. They fired five rounds,” said Malik.

Hariprasad has asked for a report on the incident. “I have asked the Pradesh Congress president (Sukhdeo Bhagat) to submit a report on the incident within 24 hours,” he said.
