WHILE summer is usually a lean time of the year for fashion designers, especially those into bridal wear, this season is signalling a new trend. Its a packed summer schedule with multiple weddings, says Babi Grewal, who runs her studio in Sector 8,Chandigarh. As the regions go-to designer for NRIs and big budget trousseaus,Grewal currently has her hands full. The concept of a summer wedding or even summer festivities isnt a rarity now, says Grewal, whose new summer line-up is currently on the shelves. Known for her heavy-duty designs that make the most of embroidery and gota work, the summer collection brings in saris and suits in pastel as well as vibrant colours (saffron, peach and the likes) with some intense styling. Punjabs traditional embroidery gota patti has been her forte and the designer continues to make full use of it. I have explored some vintage styles on shararas and short kurtis this time over lehengas, explains the designer. Working with summer-friendly fabrics such as georgette, net, crepe, the saris in the collection also see her combine a range of fabrics. Targeted at a bride-to-be and her extended family, the collection is heavily embellished. Its also busy time for me as I will soon start renovating my studio, says Grewal, who is also offering, for the first time in her two decades as a fashion designer,a price-cut on her garments as part of a special summer sale. The collection also includes semi-formal wear in georgette mostly, she says.
