Two advocates-turned-struggling artistes from the city were arrested in Mumbai on Sunday for abducting and killing small-time actress Meenakshi Thapa last month. The Mumbai police is likely to reach Allahabad on Tuesday along with the accused,Amit Kumar Jaiswal and Preeti Elvira Surin,in connection with the investigation.
Thapa,a Nepalese national who lived in Dehradun before moving to Mumbai, had gone missing a month ago from her Mumbai residence. She was brought to Allahabad, murdered, her body dismembered and disposed of after a failed extortion attempt, said the police.
Mumbai Police Crime Branch sources said the two accused had told them that Thapas decapitated body was dumped into a water tank in the building in Allahabad where they lived. They have told us that after the murder, they cut off her head and threw it from a bus between Allahabad and Lucknow. This was after they had dumped the body. We have sent a team to Allahabad to recover the body, said an officer. However,Allahabad police said the Mumbai police were yet to officially get in touch with them.
SP (City) Shailesh Kumar Yadav, said: We have been hearing about the case through the media. We have some information through unofficial channels. But so far,the Mumbai police have not informed us officially or sought our request.
Surendra Jaiswal,Amits father and a lawyer, said over phone that he came to know of Thapas disappearance on March 30 when the Mumbai police questioned him. I had no idea Amit was involved… He had been in Mumbai since July last year and had told me that he was working in a bank. He had left Allahabad after a tiff with his wife, said Jaiswal, adding that Amit used to run a coaching centre at Mumfordganj, besides practising as a lawyer. He said Amit,a father of two,met Preeti a couple of years ago. She encouraged him to join Bhojpuri films. When these things came to my knowledge,I closed down the coaching centre in June last year. In July,he left, said Jaiswal.
Amit visited him in November last year. When I asked him to return,he left and since then had not been in touch with me, said Jaiswal.
According to Mumbai police, the accused lived in Virar. They met Thapa at a film shoot and she told them that she was from a rich family and was working in Bollywood as a hobby, said the police.
The couple hatched a plan to kidnap Thapa and ask for a ransom. On March 13,they took Thapa to Allahabad on the pretext of a film shoot. They got her ATM card and mobile SIM card after killing her in Gorakhpur, said a Crime Branch officer.
The duo allegedly called up Thapas mother and demanded Rs 15 lakh, threatening to shoot a porn film featuring Thapa, and saying they would kill her if their demand was not met. They allegedly asked Thapas brother Navraj to deposit the cash in her account. The police said Navraj had given the kidnapers Rs 60,000.
